"Connect With Tech" sessions....

Why has no one mentioned that crashing tours is sometimes a prank? Right along with stealing all the "T"s all over campus this is often just a thing to do before you graduate. When visiting look for the T’s in the buildings signs. The architecture building is missing its T.

My father, uncle, husband, and neice all went to Ga Tech. It was hard and at times they were very stressed, but they all have great jobs and wouldn’t trade the education for any smiling stangers.

My daughter and I just returned from CWT yesterday. GT has been her first choice, and it’s even more so now. She had a wonderful experience.

CWT did a great job matching her with her host. She’s in the marching band in high school, and wants to continue that at college. She was thrilled when she received an email from her host that said she was in the GT marching band as well.

I found the information sessions very valuable, especially regarding the Presidential Scholarship. We are out of state, and if she cannot get some kind of scholarship, she won’t be going- it’s $40,000/year. They gave some tips for filling out the application to be geared toward getting into the semi-final pool.

Once we started the tour, my daughter went off with her group, and I didn’t see her again until lunch the next day. She said she had a great time the night before- they went bowling. She had made friends with the rest of the group she was with, and didn’t even sit with me during the lunch. She nor I ever had anyone tell us “Don’t come to Tech”, and everyone really seemed friendly and welcoming.

She went there with the idea of majoring in nuclear or chemical, engineering, but afterward, she said she was now leaning toward chemical, based on questions and feedback she had gotten.

All in all, it was worth the plane tickets for us to go. She had already been there to the Futures program they have for girls back in February. She has her heart set on going there, but we’ll just have to wait and see how the scholarship works out. With her test scores, she could get practically a free ride at UT Knoxville, plus we get the lottery scholarship as well. I hope I don’t have to disappoint her.

My son is also interested in Chemical Engineering. I would appreciate if you could share the information your daughter got on this major and also the ‘tips’ to secure financial aid.

Going to CWT this weekend…throwing it all out there to see what sticks with regard to scholarships :)

Took my daughter and she loved the school! She is my 3rd, so I have seen many campus programs at this point. CWT was fantastically presented from beginning to end. They had obviously decided to make theirs the best ever. The attentiveness of faculty and student guides had all the parents impressed, too.

Reedsmyth - that’s good to hear. My D is awaiting news about her application now. EA is to be announced on November 18th. Has your D applied for Fall 2012?

Someone had sent me a PM asking for what tips that we were given for the Presidential Scholarship during our CWT session. I’ve tried replying, but I keep getting an error message, so I’ll just post it here.

Regarding the essay- proofread! Of course, this is common sense, but they did say that every year qualified applicants are tossed out of the PS pool due to misspelled words, grammatical errors, typos, etc.

The biggest tip that I took away was regarding the extracurricular activities section of the application. They said that they spend a lot of time reviewing this section, and to make sure to be specific regarding the level of involvement in each activity.

For example, my D is in marching band, and we had put that on the app. However, it is a competitive marching band who goes to several contests every year and always win trophies. She has many hours of mandatory practices, and every fall, our schedule consists of playing at the football games on Friday nights, and competitions almost every Saturday. So, instead of just listing marching band and the offices that she held, we changed that to “member of a competitive marching band that has competed in 24 contests, winning 102 awards and trophies over the last 4 years.” We also listed the number of hours per week that she practices, plus band camp in the summer. Then, in the spring semester, she does concert band as well. This is why she doesn’t work, or do student government, or really any other clubs at school, except Beta.

We also added information to her community involvement- her youth group at church has done homeless mission and prison ministry, so we put more details regarding that.

Hope this helps. We’re out of state, so unless she gets some scholarship money, she will be going to UT Knoxville. With her ACT score, and since Tennessee has the lottery money, she’ll be able to get quite a bit of scholarships, and maybe even most of it paid. But, her first choice is GT, so I hope she gets it.

^ I did get your messages. Many thanks.

Chardo- I’m glad you got the message! It kept giving me an error message, and when I checked my sent box, it was empty. Strange.

I know this is an old thread but I am seriously considering Tech and thinking of going to the Connect to Tech. Why is everyone saying get out of GA Tech while you can? Is the atmosphere, competition, social life bad? Please someone from Tech or knowledgable answer!
