I got into Fairfield and Wait Listed at UCONN, but I am holding out hope...

I just visited UCONN the other day.

As far as state campuses go, it was very, very nice. The school is huge, and it's in farm territory, but a lot of the buildings look new and clean. It's very spaced out, as well. Storrs isn't really a college town, but with the amount of people on campus finding something to do on weekends shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, I can't help with fairfield!

I'm on the faculty at Fairfield U. Its a very lovely campus and obviously much smaller than UCONN.

I visited UConn a while back and I remember feeling kind of isolated.

Fairfield U is a Jesuit university with a solid reputation. It is in Fairfield, CT which is great town on the Long Island sound (beaches!!) with community theater, lots of restaurants, shopping and a stop on the metro-north rail line with an easy ride into Grand Central, NYC.
Besides Fairfield U, there is also Sacred Heart University so there is a pretty "young" vibe compared to many other towns in the county.

Fairfield U is a meticulously maintained fair sized campus, largely (stone) walled and fenced around the perimeter. Lush lawns, gorgeous outside. Pretty in all four seasons. It's located in a residential area. Some great acoustic performing venues for small ensembles. Great stone buildings, reminiscent of medieval/European churches.

UCONN is a large sprawling campus. During the howling winter winds, it seems like it takes forever to walk from one end to the other. It's been 30 years and my wife still remembers freezing her then smaller tail off. Plenty of new buildings, largely in the center. "Old" college view on Rte 195, the main drag in front of campus. Gorgeous in pristine snow. You're in a rural area, most activity centered on campus. Hartford is a hour away, Boston an hour and a half to two hours. Great campus made ice cream.

I would give the nod to UConn for both academics and sports, but Fairfield U. wins hands down for location. Both are good schools, but very different in character and offerings. You'll get a good education at either school. UConn has more to offer in terms of academic depth and breadth of course offerings, graduate and professional school options, etc., and it's the lower cost option. You'll get more personal attention at Fairfield U. (and you'll pay for it), but that's something that you won't get at UConn unless you're in the honors program.

Did anyone apply to either of these schools and get any aid?
Fairfield U hasn't sent out their aid information yet, is that usaul?

They are very different schools.

Fairfield is very, well, Fairfield. As in county. As in town. Gorgeous, well maintained, compact.

UConn is not exactly the Yukon*. But it's further out, definitely agricultural country with the burbs attempting to encroach but not quite making it yet. And since it's in northeastern Connecticut, it's quite a bit inland as compared to Fairfield in the southwest corner -- and therefore colder. There's been a lot of recent building on campus -- as well some lovely old buildings and some post WWII garbage.

Your best choice would definitely depend on just what you want to study. Fairfield won't have nearly the breadth of majors and courses available.

*A clueless reporter once identified my alma mater, in print, as Yukon University in Connecticut. Often people would say "I didn't know they had horses in Alaska." I was an animal science major, concentrating in dairy and equine at UConn in the 70s.

i would study business

Uconn - bigger campus (obviously) but pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Fairfield U is gorgeous, right in downtown Fairfield which is a great town. Fairfield U is also near the beach...

2 of my friends go up there on the weekends is rare to not find a party, all the ppl on his floor are really nice and the doorms arent that bad lol soph/junior doorms are hugeeee and seniors usually live off campus in houses which are good size and always partying, campus is HUGEEEE so walking kinda sucks during the winter but if you do go bring REALLYYY WARMM clothes. dinning halls are really nice too not crappy food and ppl making the food actually know what their doing. i dont go there but am applying there for fall sems. i guarentee if u visit it. ull like it

coreym: is this UCONN i am guessing???

bumppppppppppppp

coreym is definitely talking about uconn; i definitely wouldn’t call fairfield’s campus “HUGEEEEEE”
