Consequences of a NP

I am a second-semester freshman. This semester I decided to take 17 units worth of classes, and by my own folly I didn’t realize that three of those classes had midterms on the EXACT SAME DAY. Even worse was the fact that for all three classes there was only that single midterm for the whole semester, so needless to say I was extremely stressed out. In one of the classes, Math 53, I got what was quite possibly a D on the midterm (with the curve), which was worth 30% of my overall grade. Aside from the final, the only other factor in my grade is the 20% quizzes grade, and for those I am averaging Bs. As the final is worth 50%, it will be nearly impossible for me to get anything higher than a C, and I am really starting to get concerned that even that might be reaching. I’ve decided to take the class p/np, as it isn’t necessary for my major (econ) and I don’t want it to affect my gpa (3.8 at the moment).

As a prospective econ major hoping to go to grad school, I was wondering how it would affect my acceptance chances if I ended up receiving a np for this class. I do plan on putting a lot of effort into passing the course, but I’m a little terrified as to what negative impact this will have on my future prospects should I receive that terrifying np.
