Hello all, I am a senior who is awaiting admission decisions from his colleges (in case you all need to know, mostly ivy leagues). I'll get the answers around the end of this month.

I was wondering about how colleges reserve the right to repeal your admission decision until your first day of college. If I get an underage drinking violation this summer, between the time I get my decision and my first day at the school, do you think there's a likely chance I will be denied entrance to the school? Do they check for that sort of stuff and are the consequences that severe? Please and thanks.

(Also, please do not lecture about how drinking is immoral and irresponsible. I do not ever drink. I am just wondering in case something goes awry for me during graduation or something and I get caught)

When I read the title of your thread, I assumed you had already made a mistake.
However, at this point you have not been admitted and you haven’t committed a crime.
Stay on the right track and you won’t have anything to worry about.

The “right” track? You’ve already been accepted to college, j0ker. Don’t be a moron and drink and drive or do hard drugs, and don’t become a felon, and I doubt there’ll be a problem. I mean, if people who have matriculated can do it, I doubt it’s a huge deal if you do as well. The obvious exceptions are if you’re going to a school that is very…um…forward in its assertions of moral standards (read: BYU et al).

Thank you but my question is still unanswered. In short, my question was, “will colleges be able to see an underage violation after I am admitted, and if they do, are the consequences severe?”

Usually, you’d just get an alcohol citation, which is less than a misdemeanor and basically a traffic ticket. I doubt colleges would see that. And for the record, it’s very, very hard to get caught with alcohol unless you’re an idiot.

Yes, hkobb7, I realize that. First of all, that comment wasn’t directed toward you. It was a reply to siliconvalleymom and I was writing it as you posted, so I didn’t see your post beforehand. Also, I posted it to clarify what I was asking rather than paraphrase and I put quote marks around it to highlight the actual question from the rest of the post.

OH, and for the record, I knew a guy last year who got accepted to UT-Austin, got arrested for drinking at a school dance, went to alternative school, and now he is at UT.

No offense, and I mean this in as sincere a way as I can convey over the internet, but if you don’t drink and are prematurely expecting to get a drinking violation within the first few months of you drinking, I think you need to take a step back and consider your maturity level with regards to drinking.

It’s understandable that you will be experimenting with alcohol prior to college, and I would just say don’t worry about it yet. If a time comes when you feel like drinking, just be responsible about it and put yourself in an environment where you won’t get hurt and you won’t have any interaction with the police

Drinking is “immoral and irresponsible,” in your words. You should rethink your summer plans. Talk to you parents. They will want to have SOME INFLUENCE ON YOUR DECISION TO GET STUPID OVER THE SUMMER. You should rethink your summer plans.

Glido, you made me laugh.
To the OP: if you don’t drink, you won’t get a citation. I truly do not understand why you are stressed about this question.

For the sake of argument, let’s say I think it is unlikely that most colleges would revoke your acceptance for a drinking (unless it involves DUI). However, there are some that might do so for any drinking incident.

How would this answer change your future actions? Are you going to risk it? And if so, would the risk be worth it – because even if I said “No they won’t”, if I’m wrong you pay the price?

Well I’m gonna play devil’s advocate here and say that, at the age of 18, I personally believe it’s ok to be drinking a little bit of alcohol. HOWEVER, without having ever drunk before, and preparing to get a violation… now that just sounds like the OP needs to reevaluate his plans here. It’s just… odd. Of all the teenagers I know who drink (about 95% of my friends), they’ve been nervous about doing something stupid/harmful, drinking to the point of harming themselves, and getting caught by parents/cops. However, none of them began planning for such incidents months before, especially when the main question wasn’t “what are the possible negative repercussions to my/someone’s wellbeing” but rather “when I start drinking in a few months and possibly/likely get a violation, what will colleges do?” Just seems like perhaps the OP lacks the maturity and responsibility necessary to be a mature/responsible drinker.

@born2dance94 I am not expecting to get arrested for it. The most likely scenario is that I do it but will not get caught with it. The reason I asked this question is so I could learn what possible consequences I could be dealing with (in my state of incessant paranoia). The reason I asked is because I was afraid that if I do it and somehow, out of all the odds, get caught after I have already committed to a school and everything, I will get the admission revoked. Then not only would I have been kicked out, but the deadline would have passed for all the other schools, making it impossible for me to go to college that year, essentially screwing me over completely.

^^
I don’t know what happened to your earlier thread but my reply is the same: If you don’t drink now, why would you be dumb enough to risk everything by starting before you even get to college. You may not even like it, you know.
