Are there any other alternatives to this major? I'll be attending Ohio State this Fall as an undecided major, but I'm interested in this major, or other conservation majors. What are some others that are similar to this one? Ohio State also gives the option of personalizing your major. Not sure if that would be a good idea or not..

I’m sure it would be a good idea, in terms of personal preferences but not necessarily help or deter job prospects.

Environmental science majors aren’t making minimum wage but they aren’t raking in the dough. From numbers I have seen they make modest incomes in jobs relatively similar to what you see. Environmental SCIENCE, not studies. Environmental Studies is a liberal arts degree that does not really have any practical applications that can guarantee you a career.

Environmental engineers is a much more different setting than what you may like (running around the forest with birds and squirrels, jk haha) but they make more money. You are still essentially helping the environment, especially with ensuring proper transportation of water, limiting effects on rivers and their environments, etc.

Thanks @Ctesiphon So you don’t think that having a personalized major will affect anybody from turning me away or offering me a job? Yeah. I’m definitely staying away from environmental studies. I was also looking at a wildlife and forestry degree, but I feel like conservation biology is more broad and would give me more options career-wise.

It sort of depends. I do not know much about conversation biology or forestry and stuff so I can not offer too much help there. A personalized major would be fine as long as you aren’t taking a bunch of “easy” or unrelated courses, you still should be focusing in that one area and be both wide and tall, if you know what I mean.
