I just wanted to ask this one more time, as it is probably my top concern. How conservative/religious are the students. Since such a large precentage come from in-state, which tends to be a conservative state. Basically how would a liberal Jewish Chicagoan fit in?

well, if you are coming next fall then you'll have me as a liberal jewish Israeli :-). anyways, from what I've heard the place is very liberal, tends "left" politically, meaning that there aren't suppose to be any problems for minoroties to fit in. but i've never been there so probably one of the cureent students might give a better answer...

You'd fit right in. As someone else said, Carolina is a blue island in a red sea.

The one thing Carolina is not is conservative. I've read someone else write in another CC post that perhaps the loneliest people on campus are the Carolina Republicans. I really don't think you will have ANY trouble fitting in; at Duke it might be a problem but not at UNC.

We have a very active Hillel group, and I have several Jewish friends (I'm half Jewish myself). Politically, almost all of my friends are liberal, sometimes to the point that I become more conservative just to balance them out. Coming from Boulder, CO, one of the most liberal places in the country, UNC was not a big adjustment at all. And to all you conservatives out there, there is still a significant presence in that camp too, although it is perhaps not as active. Overall, there is a great range of political debate that occurs here. Ralph Nader came to speak last year, Michael Badnarik (libertarian presidential candidate) was here this year, Paul Begala of CNN's Crossfire will be here next week, John Edwards works here, you get the idea...

oh carolina is liberal. that's part of the reason it's called "the berkley of the east".
