Conservative & Irreligious colleges?

That should say “mostly historical religious affiliations,” not “mostly historical and religious affiliations.”

@Midwestmomofboys - Schools like W&L may have fewer URM’s than others, but that does not mean that such students are not institutionally supported by the school. See below.

@idontknowijust “looking for colleges that are conservative”

Can you explain in what ways you are conservative? Understanding more about that will be helpful in making recommendations. That word means a lot of different things to different people.

Does it mean you:

  1. don’t smoke, or drink, and are going to college to learn, and not to party?
  2. are embarrassed and annoyed by students protest silly things like the General’s Chicken?
  3. want a large Republican presence on campus?
  4. are uncomfortable around LGBT people and oppose equal treatment for them?
  5. are uncomfortable with many women on campus and particularly in positions of authority?
  6. are uncomfortable with racial and ethnic minorities on campus and particularly in positions of authority?
  7. like guns, living off the grid, and other prepper-like behaviors?

Help me out here!

Agree about Dickinson. Should not be on list. From what I have heard, Denison shouldn’t be either.

@Much2learn I’d say number 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 would apply to me.

… so a place where homophobia, misogyny, and racism are accepted, but not overly religious. I don’t have any suggestions.

Curious to see what colleges end up on this refined list. Even Hillsdale claims to be accepting of LGBT relationships but just doesn’t support gay marriage.

Everyplace I can think of like this is religious – Spring Arbor, Liberty, Oral Roberts…

Sorry to say, but I hope no place that fits those criteria exists.

I don’t think that you will be able to find both. There are religious schools that are close, but I don’t know of any secular schools like that.

Are any military colleges of interest to you? The Citadel might be worth looking at.

Oh boy, did the OP just admit to being 4, 5 and 6? Anonymity is a wonderful thing, I guess.

OP, I suggest you take a look at Tufts, U Penn, UCLA, U of Washington, Macalester, SDSU, NYU, Oberlin, Skidmore and if you are a woman, Mt. Holyoke.

You missed Reed. Grinnell, and Columbia.

Given OP’s criteria, I think a bit of snark is justified - let the snarkiness begin!

It’s going to be hard to cater to that particular level of homophobia, racism and misogyny without a bit of gun-toting. NRA-supporting, anti-abortion activity, most likely found only in ultra right-wing educational establishments such as Liberty U., Oral Roberts - maybe Trump U.? (Oh, I forgot, they won’t grant degrees and are too busy fighting lawsuits!)

In the words of the inimitable John Zmirak (whose Choosing the Right College has some useful info, but the rest of his opinions are so over-the-top right wing they are beyond appalling - probably not unlike the OP’s) let’s “Arm the Unborn!”

31, U of Washington?

@lovethebard “let the snarkiness begin!”

The OP saved a lot of time for everyone by being honest about their views, and hasn’t criticized anyone else’s views. They only asked for information. While I completely disagree with those views, it is a free country. I don’t think that snarking is helpful at all in this situation. People should be able to come here and ask an honest question and get an honest answer. If the person were attempting to debate or assert those views I would feel completely differently. However, they didn’t do that so please, save the snark for now.

Just to chime in re: Hillsdale as a “conservative & irreligious” college-- as a current student, I wouldn’t agree with that characterization since Hillsdale is quite religious for a nonsectarian school. While there is no official statement of faith and faculty and students come from a variety of religious (and irreligious) backgrounds, there is a very open and ongoing conversation about faith. Most students are practicing Protestants and Roman Catholics, and the various faith organizations (InterVarsity, Catholic Society, Orthodox Society, etc.) are active. All students are required to take one semester each of western philosophy and religion, the latter of which spends quite a bit of time reading Jewish and early Christian texts.

That being clarified-- OP, please don’t come to Hillsdale. We are interested in thoughtful, respectful conversations here.

Brava, @warriordaughter - makes me want to encourage D17 to go there!

To sum it up, I think the OP us looking for a school full of straight white men who are conservative but not religious. Maybe the service academies? That’s probably the closest he will find, though I personally dread the idea of someone with his views going to one of those schools.

I’m not sure the service academies would be entirely happy with someone who’s uncomfortable with women in positions of authority, though—there’s a culture change sweeping through the military (particularly in the officer ranks), and the OP’s statement of preferences doesn’t match it well.

Perhaps, as someone else mentioned upthread, the non-federally chartered military schools like VMI and The Citadel, but even then I’m not certain it’s a good fit.
