Does anyone know anything about this program? My S is intrigued by the composition department which has Chen Yi and Zhou Long on the faculty.

However, other than that, and looking through the website at visiting composers and the new music ensembles, we know nothing about it, nor the University itself.

SpiritManager, a couple of posters had students accepted at UMissouri/KC http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1060444933-post487.html. You might want to try emailing or PM'ing for their impressions.

I've talked to Chen Yi, here's what she said to me about the composition department....

Thanks for your request. UMKC has a large composition program (60-70 composition majors, which includes 1/3 undergrad and 2/3 grad), several new graduate students (5-10) would be accepted every year (depending on the number of students who complete their programs). Performing force is pretty active. Composition program has Composers Guild (student run) presents monthly chamber concerts, Musica Nova is a student new music ensemble (who earn credits or scholarship from performance of new music, including UMKC students music), annual chamber music competition (including 3-6 finalists whose works are performed formally on stage to get audience voting for winners), annual orchestra reading and orchestral work competition, as well as inter-school ensemble exchange concerts. The graduate school also provides travel grant for students who need airfare to attend concerts with their works performed. Some reserved grants are given to students who are admitted to summer composition workshops or festival as financial aid, just name some of opportunities. To apply to our MM program, you may need to submit 4-5 strong works with excellent scoring, performance and recording, which cover various instrumentation. You may visit our site at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, in order to see the detailed application guidelines. Hope you can get the sense of the UMKC composition program from my reply. Please write again if you have more questions. Thanks. Dr. Chen
