Hello. I'm applying for admission Fall 2009 for flute performance. I auditioned at NEC, Eastman, Peabody, and CMU. I was offered admission at Peabody. I haven't seen much flute conversation on this forum, and was hoping to get some good feedback going. Where has anyone else auditioned, and/or been accepted?

Does anyone know how many flutes were taken at these schools last year?

Congratulations. Flute is one of the most selective fields out there behind voice and piano. To eve pass prescreening at a top conservatory is already an achievement, let alone be accepted at one.

I also play flute. I auditioned at cmu, umichigan, oberlin, peabody, mcgill, ncsa and northwestern. have only heard back from ncsa (accepted). Have official peabody acceptances been sent or did a teacher contact you

I received an email from Ms. Piccinini, that’s how I found out. I haven’t received my “official” admissions materials yet. You took a lot of auditions, where is your top pick?

Hmm I like all the schools I applied to for different reasons so I’m just going to wait to see what my choices are I can’t possibly choose one fave at this point. what’s your top choice? Do you know if there is an official date that cmu acceptances are sent, I can’t keep track of which schools have an official date, which ones say like 4-6 weeks after your audition and all that!!

Yeah, I agree. It’s hard to declare a number 1. I’m planning to visit/sit in on classes/take lessons at schools (plural-wishful thinking!!) where I get accepted before I make a decision. I’m just happy to have gotten in somewhere at this point. I think I remember CMU being at the end of March, like most. I don’t know much about ncsa…what drew you to it?

Also, what are you looking into doing this summer? I applied to EMF, Brevard, Aria, and NSO. It’s fun to have someone to compare notes with, thanks for your responses!

I wish I had sat in on some classes at schools when i visited - my family has spent so much money flying around for auditions that we can’t really do any more visiting!! I was drawn to ncsa by Tadeu Coelho, i’ve heard him perform and really like him and i’ve heard really good things about his teaching & his studio so i decided to apply
As for the summer I applied to a weeklong masterclass with Jim Walker and Elizabeth Rowe at colburn and that was the only thing I applied to, looking forward to more relaxing this summer finally. What summer program do you think you want to go to? Who teaches at the nso program and emf? Amy Porter is at aria, right? I found out today I got into her studio at michigan, im really excited!
Nice talking to you!

My D auditioned at CMU last year on oboe. She received a letter with admission from the music school soon after her audition but had to wait until the last week of March for the envelope with the school acceptance. The financial aid letter came about a week after that. Nancy

I just applied to festivals for orchestral playing…not really based on teachers. There aren’t really any “big names” at EMF or NSO, but the orchestral playing is great. Yes, Amy Porter is at Aria, along with Bonita Boyd, Brad Garner, and others. Aria is all chamber, so it would be good too. I also did my obligatory app to Aspen, but it’s not going to happen this year, haha.

Your Jim Walker week sounds wonderful. I haven’t heard of that one before. Have you studied with him or Elizabeth Rowe before? I looked it up, it’s looks very interesting. As does a laid-back summer before we all head off to college!

Hopefully we’ll hear from more places this week…eek I hate running to the mailbox everyday!

Congratulations on a successful audition process!! Flute is extremely selective. I am sure you have all been told this since you first picked up the instrument. Always the longest lines at festival auditions, the highest number of applicants with the lowest number of spots open. So, once again…congratulations.
D is applying for fall 2009 flute performance. We finished the audition tour a couple of weeks ago. (Did February even exist??) As of now, she is leaning more and more toward a university setting over a conservatory for undergrad. She is weighing her decision mostly on the teacher, what the school has to offer and her overall “feel” on audition day…
Good luck on the rest of your results! I am glad to see some posts for flutes! For as many as there are out in the world, I think “we” must keep to ourselves since you see so few postings for them!

Wow it is so great to hear about all these great flutists getting in places!!! Well I was accepted into Mr.Kujalas studio, but I was not accepted to the university. I was also accepted to csusf and U colorado at boulder where Christina Jennings teaches. I am hoping, however, to go to McGill, but I haven’t heard back yet! What did you play for your audition (just curious!!!)

Re: McGill, from your other thread: one of the top Canadian music schools and a top choice for many from the US. Historically, they seem to be one of the later notification dates.

Thanks, violadad. Ilovetheflute - how do you know you were accepted to Mr. Kujala’s studio but not the university? Northwestern results are not supposed to come out until April 1st, I thought (or maybe late March?).

Yes I do mean CSU San Francisco…as for Northwestern, I applied early and got an email from Mr. Kujala informing me about my successful audition. I have yet to learn the Nielsen but it is on the top of my list! Now I am learning the Muczynski. I love it! I played Prokofiev, Bach em, Syrinx, and several excerpts. I am happy all my auditions are over! It was all very stressful. I hope you get in where you want! Good luck! Oh I was just wondering what kind of flute to you play on? again just curious :)
