book by Richard Henry Morris
music by Jeanine Tesori
lyrics by Dick Scanlan

It’s 1922, and young Millie Dillmount has just moved to New York City in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz, with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate. Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Musical and based on the popular movie, Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.

LITTLE ME
music by Cy Coleman
lyrics by Carolyn Leigh
book by Neil Simon

starring RICK WESLEY

Little Me is a whopping, whirling musical burlesque of the familiar "as told to" biography - in this case, the memoirs of a queen of the silver screen, Belle Poitrine. The show expertly harnesses all the pleasing elements of musical comedy to trace the epic romance of low-born Belle Schlumpfert and high-born Noble Eggleston. In the course of her quest for the wealth culture and social position that will permit her marriage to Noble, Belle embarks on an extravagant and varied career. In each adventure, Belle is accompanied by an admiring male, and each startling resolution moves her one step closer to her goal. A 1963 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical.

EVITA
music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
lyrics by Tim Rice

Argentina's controversial first lady is the subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twenty-four, first lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, Evita creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself. Winner of 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Shenandoah Conservatory Student Performs in ‘Hairspray’

08-09-07
Shenandoah Conservatory student Shane Simpson is appearing in movie theatres around the world in the hit summer musical comedy “Hairspray,” which was released by New Line Cinema on July 20. Simpson plays the role of Skillet, one of the kids in detention at a Baltimore high school who helps the movie's heroine dance her way to success and happiness.

Simpson, who plans to graduate with a degree in dance in 2009, is well on his way to establishing a secure foundation for a lifetime in the arts. He had a role in “The Other Me,” a made-for-TV movie released in 2000. He also played the role of Young Simba in the Toronto tour of the Broadway musical “The Lion King.”

Growing up in Toronto, Canada, Simpson attended the Cardinal Carter Academy for the Performing Arts, where his powerful performance style and outstanding physical technique were groomed for a career in dance and theatre.

“He immediately captured our attention when we visited Cardinal Carter on a recruitment visit," said Erica Helm, chair of the Dance Division at Shenandoah University. "Shane has a huge passion for movement that comes through in his dancing . . . it's like a fire burning inside of him that lights him up from the inside. You cannot help but appreciate the enthusiasm and energy he brings to the creative process."

Simpson began his studies at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University in fall 2005, where he quickly earned principal roles in works choreographed by the faculty and fellow dance majors. When the opportunity to perform in “Hairspray” came along, the dance faculty worked with Simpson to arrange a schedule that allowed him travel back and forth to Toronto for filming and still complete the coursework for his dance major. "Shane came to Shenandoah with awesome skills," said Assistant Professor of Dance Alan Arnett. "Experiences like these have deepened his understanding of dance as a professional art."

-Mikey :)

My son is very interested in attending Shenandoah. We saw on the web site they are not doing regionals this year so we will go to the school. Does anyone have suggestions on the best time to audition? I have read that you don’t want the first auditon date, because they tend to forget about you, but you don’t want the last audition date either. If anyone has any thoughts on this, I would appreciate it. And who is Margie?

Hcpss,

You can choose any audition date. They most certainly will not forget you if you audition at the first audition. At the auditions they tape all of the kids on video to go back them for reference if they need to. In fact, last year they told the auditioners of the November audition before Christmas I believe if they were accepted.

I auditioned in February when I was a senior in high school. But I have heard do not audition on the last date, because there will be less finanical money awarded to students.

Margie is the head of admissions of the conservatory! She is this fantastic woman who will answer ALL of your questions. She knows everything there is to know and she is the sweetest woman in the world! If you have any admissions questions, or just questions in general that you want her to answer, you can email her at msobczyn@su.edu!

Hcpss-

I do not think it matters when you audition, however, I do agree with managy that the money may be dwindling by the last audition. My daughter auditioned in January of her senior year in high school. (she is now a sophomore) She found out within weeks that she was accepted. She did get a scholarship also. (not big, but nice…)

During the January auditions the Music Theater Ensemble performs Rodgers and Hammersteins A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING. We saw this group perform when my d auditioned and really enjoyed the revue!! It was nice to see the show, then go to the audition the next day. I believe this is the only show that falls on an audition weekend.

Margie is an absolute gift to the school. She is the head of admissions at the conservatory. She calms the nerves, answers all questions…just a truly wonderful person. She put up with my 50 million questions I had!! I would not hesitate to contact her with any questions.

I wish you the best! We will be in Winchester for the January audition weekend…

Take care!

I read that they do rolling admissions, so I would think that the earlier the audition, the better. I might just be mistaking that for the general admissions

Thanks everyone for your input. We are doing shadow day and will most likely sign up for the January audition date. I think Nov. might be too soon, but we will see. I know he has one of his monologues down pat, but he needs to work on the second. He is currently doing his high school play which as you all know is time consuming, not to mention all of his music activities. Why he decided to do marching band is beyond me! I don’t understanding rolling admissions very well - do you get an answer sooner? How can schools do that if you don’t apply for financial aid until January? Which brings up another question - does applying for financial aid hurt your changes for admission?

I am not sure if Shenandoah does rolling admissions…you may want to check on that. Financial aid will not hurt your acceptance at all. It seems that the audition process does not have a clue about the application process…only that you have paid the fees!! I know that there are exceptions…but for the most part the audition seems to be the most important factor on being accepted, not your essay, or gpa…or your financial need or “non-need”!!
So glad to hear you are doing shadow day! Not sure if d is participating, but I will see.
I will be at Shenandoah for the January audition weekend. I must put a plug in for the Music Theatre Ensemble’s performance of A Grand Night for Singing…that will be performed the audition weekend! We saw this ensemble when my d auditioned, and was very impressed! Now, I am going down to see the show because my d made this ensemble and is perfomrning in it!! ![]()
Safe travels to everyone. I look forward to hearing about shadow day!
