Considered Canadian Universities?

How many of you have considered canadian universities? Good ones such as Toronto, McGill, UBC, Dalhousie, York and Western should catch your attention! Universities dont just limit to the USA. Ive been here on 3 accounts for 2 years and I always just read about american universities… can you guys maybe tell me why? I mean Canadian universities are just as good, if not better!

i went to look at mcgill & i loved it!

Mcgill is a great school for sciences, especially their chemistry lab. It is by far the most organized and clean place ever!

york has a joint program with sheridan for their arts program. sheridan is one of the best art schools in canada so you're getting the best of both worlds if you get in their program.

i think the reason why there's little info on canadian unis is because well, there aren't really that well known outside of canada. also there's not as much good unis compared to the states.

I'm wondering whether anyone has info. on getting a second ba in the US or Canada. Which schools offer second BAs? And do any offer financial aid or merit-based scholarships? Since I've almost completed my first BA, I would really like to incur as little debt as possible for the second one!

BTW, my current BA is in a humanities field, and I'm interested in pursuing a second BA in math. So, no, simply going to graduate school in math isn't in an option for me--I lack the background.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

In Canada, you could get a BA anywhere.. mostly known in Ontario.. math is well known in Canada at the following schools: Waterloo, Toronto and Queens. You should be able to get scholarships and fianancial aid.. toronto tution is only 5k. So yea. Canadian Universities rock!

thanks so much Canadian! I'll definitely look into those. Do you know whether it would hurt my chances for merit aid that I'm American? Is most aid reserved for Canadians?

One More Thing.....

Does anyone know whether FAFSA aid can be used at Canadian universities? I'm assuming the answer is no, but I thought I'd ask!:) Also, I already have some student loans from my first BA in the US. If I go to school in Canada or abroad, will those loans be deferred? They're the sort of loans that will be deferred if I remain enrolled somewhere at least half-time. I'm just not sure if that means half-time anywhere or half-time in the US.

gogirl- It might hurt your chances a tiny bit but you will still get some fin. aid regardless. FAFSA cannot be used in canada. As for loans... I suggest you start paying them off.. you dont want to be in debt till ur 60 do you? :)

for math go check out WATERLOO UNIVERSITY!

The only good ones in Canada are UofT, Mcgill, Queens, UBC, Waterloo (all science wiz go there)... the rest are pretty crappy e.g. western (except business), guelph, sheridan, york, dalhousie (what the hell is this? already a ****ty education, but living in halifax? ROFl)

Those schools are still comparatively easy to get in than US university, and the worst part is you can't flaunt that you went to an US UNIVERSITY IF YOU DO

Thanks for all your advice.

Canadian: You're right, I don't want to be paying off loans indefinitely. Fortunately, the ones I have now are very few and all subsidized--so the government's paying all my interested until I leave school.

I'll definitely look into Waterloo and all the others.

Iwantfood: As for being able to brag about going to a US University.... I already have/am. I'm very close to finishing my first BA... Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, but thanks for your advice too.

Gogirl- Which country do you want to live in? Canada would be a peaceful place, a great place to start a family and make money... however USA. you can work as much as you like and possibily make more money

Of course Canadian schools are easier to get into than US ones - they're public institutions, while unis like HYPS are private. Besides, what you flaunt is entirely up to you (if you do that kind of thing). Sure, "I went to Harvard" will always sound good, but so will "I won the Canadian National Millennium Scholarship as well as a huge entrance from X uni." Besides, it is really hard to flaunt being $120,000 US in debt. ;)

Canadian unis are great because they are less expensive for a good quality education. They also tend to have a lot more merit-based entrance scholarships as well as loans/aid. I think that what you do with university is what you make it, wherever you end up. You could get crap grades at HYPS or you could have it made at Dalhousie (not so much for undergrad maybe, but they have amazing Medicine and Law programs), UBC, McGill, Queen's, etc. I think that the people who waste their time bragging about uni and bashing others are probably the ones who will learn the least there. :)

gogirl - if you're interested in the west, UBC also has a good science/math program. A ton of prospective engineers from my high school end up there.

Thanks cowgirl, I'll take those into consideration.

BTW, for interested Americans out there, I've found that US financial aid can be used at several Canadian unis! I was really surprised--I think most Americans don't realize this. Another note to Americans--look at the tuition costs at Canadian unis and do the currency converter from Canadian to US dollars--it's really a bargain!

I haven't researched this very closely yet--it might be that certain financial aid is reserved for us-only institutions. But unless I've really misread something, at least some government loans can be taken to Canada.

For example, I found this on the Queens website: Queen's has been authorized by the US Department of Education to administer Stafford Loans and Plus Loans. Further information on these loan programs is available on the U.S. Department of Education website.

Check it out at http://www.queensu.ca/registrar/awards/Internat.html

I really love UBC for it's location. Bottom line though, none of those schools will make you a strong contender for a top job here in America. No one ever heard of them!

I remember someone mentioning that people thought McGill was a new McDonald's sandwich :O

Nearly all Canadian universities are pretty good. Compared to many US schools they are significantly cheaper and easier to get into. But the vast majority of US kids are not much interested in going off to a foreign country for college. There is the unfamiliarity and some worries about how a foreign degree will be regarded in the US. (In my experience Canadian degrees are well-respected in the US). It's not that anyone dislikes Canadian schools; they just aren't on the radar.

Canadian schools are on the radar.. I think the best school of business in Canada woule be University of Western Ontario mainly because its know in Canada and INTERNATIONALLY (Hong Kong) etc. Its amazing actully because in a few years Hong Kong and China will be the most powerful countries and since Americans are at war with everybody? lol. jks. Canadians will have a good chance at top jobs. If your into business Canada will pay more at an excutive position. 1.5 mil a year sounds good to me?
