Hi,

I'm a current Junior, considering applying to Hopkins for college, but all I know about Hopkins is that its got an excellent medical program. However, I doubt I will be pursuing any medical course of study.

I am proud to say that I have strengths in both the Humanities and in the Math/Sci areas. I really want a school that can blend these two areas very well.

That being said, I was hoping to get advice from current students about this school - what's life like for the non-med people at Hopkins? Does Hopkins offer a strong blend of the Humanities and the Sciences? What can you tell me about life at Hopkins that I can't find on Google?

Thanks in advance!

I’m an Applied Math and International Studies major so I’m best to answer this. Hopkins is strong in many areas outside of pre-med. In fact, JHU is considered one of the top schools for international studies and it provides a ton of research opportunities in almost every major. Hopkins has a reputation of being cut-throat and unsocial but both are very untrue. I work in groups on the homework for most of my classes and there are plenty of parties and school sponsored events on the weekend

The blend of humanities and science/engineering is really nice. There’s no set curriculum, so, while you have to fulfill requirements in your major, you get to choose most of your “elective” type classes. I’m an engineer, but I’m still able to take really cool English classes and History classes, because those are subjects I enjoy as well.

As for not being pre-med: life is basically the same! A lot of the research going on around Hopkins is definitely medicine-oriented, but there’s strong programs in all subjects. Pre-meds and non-pre-meds hang out and take classes together; everyone receives the same caliber of education.
