Considering Illinois Tech? - professor will answer questions

@xraymancs‌

I have made inquiries and will get back to you. I suspect that it will be sometime during the summer, once it is clear hwich of the admitted students will be attending in the Fall.

@mdt1995‌ Hi, I am an engineering undergrad at IIT. I just wanted to answer your question about the Greek Life. Joining a fraternity/sorority takes time (a semester). Depending on your interest and your involvement with a particular house during the Greek Recruitment Week, the people in the house will choose you. For that entire semester, you will be involved with the House activities. If you do well and if they think that you will be a good addition, then you will be asked to join them as a brother/sister. So you will have to stay in the campus housing (other than greek) for atleast one semester. Even after you become a part of a house, you can choose where you want to live.

thanks @hopingforbetter‌ !

hey @xraymancs‌, i intend on majoring in business administration, but can i minor in technology, mathematics, and design? or only one?

The minors are all listed in the [undergraduate bulletin](<a href=“Redirect Notice”>Redirect Notice) on page 164 and they change relatively regularly as courses are added. As of now, there is no minor in design but there are a few courses available to undergraduates with permission. Some of the engineering minors are restricted to certain majors but I suspect you can find something that suits you.

can i minor in two subjects at once. for instance, can i major in business, and minor in applied mathematics AND information technology & management?

Yes, as long as the requirements are met for both minors, no problem.

Hi, Professor, I am wondering if a Tuition Exchange student admitted by IIT can still be considered for merit scholarship to cover the room and board. According to TE, IIT offers full tuition for qualified TE students. Another question is about research opportunities for undergraduate students: Is it common to do research with professors on campus? How about off-campus opportunities? BTW, what is the percentage of commuting students? Are most students from the Chicago area?

I am not completely conversant with financial aid but my suspicion is no. Most merit scholarships only apply to tuition and not room and board. i would suspect that it is the same for tuition exchange.

Many students do research on campus with faculty. It is not a requirement but if you make an effort to find something it is usually possible. For off-campus, students usually do that in the summers. Through an REU or something like that.

The commuters are usually from Chicago but sometimes for a suburb. Commuting makes things more challenging but I know a number of students who have done well and commuted. I can’t tell you the percentage but that would only be a valid number for first year students since many students find an apartment and live off-campus in their final 2 years. Not technically commuting but the net effect is the same.

Professor,
Thanks for answering all my questions. We’ll try to visit the campus in the near future.

Hello, I was wondering if IIT offers Spanish as a minor? or if you have Spanish classes?

There are some language classes but no language majors at this time. Occasionally, there is a language course but not all the time.

Hi, I had a couple questions.

 1. Is college life at IIT mostly Greek life?
 2. What % of students graduate with engineering or computer science degrees?

No, Greek life is important but many students are not in fraternities or sororities. There are many non-Greek student organizations as well.

The latest available statistics from 2013 are as follows:
Engineering (all kinds) ~64%
Computer Science ~10%
Other Math & Science ~12%

Hey, it’s a Tech school!

Is your early action binding or non binding?

Non-binding. It is early action not early decision. The December 1 deadline guarantees eligibility for our Camras Scholarships.

Also, for undergrad admissions is there a way to check your application status? If so, how can I receive log in information?

@polinag96 I will check on this and send you an answer as soon as the Admission Office gives me the response.

@polinag96 : here is the answer I got from one our staff members at the Admissions Office

If you have submitted an application and not gotten this email, please contact the Admissions Office directly and ask them to chek on your application status and send the email out again.
