Considering Transferring

Hi I'm a current Furman student. I've been there a year. An option has come up to be a transfer student to my past first choice school. But, I want to know if there's potential for things to improve at Furman.

Furman feels very "vanilla" to me, and I've become very self conscious this past year because I'm not from the south and not the the typical country-club person.

I just want to know if people become more inclusive and less close-minded later on at Furman or if it always feels like high school.

Gosh, that’s a hard one to answer. Mostly because the answer is completely up to you. Most freshman go through a time where they think they would like to transfer. I am referring to almost all freshman. It’s a just a time of complete discomfort. Everything is new, and sometimes difficult.

The good news is you made it. You completed your first year. If you feel the other school is more likely to fit your current needs and your future goal better then change may be worth it.

However- it may not. You’d be new all over again. If you do not have many friends at the new school you begin the process once more.

My daughter attends Furman, is not from the south and is very, very happy. In her first semester she made sure to join a few different groups. Some service, some faith oriented. She then chose to rush second semester. These all helped her. She lived in Lakeside and didn’t find a huge group to hang out with so the groups she joined provided many new opportunities to meet people. Yes, I do think as everyone gets more comfortable in their own skin people relax and don’t worry so much about the little stuff and open up.

You really should speak with your parents and with some friends you have at Furman. They can all give you insight that we, not knowing you, cannot. Best wishes for a great outcome!!

If your other option is more highly ranked than Furman and if it was your first-choice school before, why think twice? Transfer to it.
