Considering Williams- Med school, Science programs?, Asian American...

Hey CC'ers, I was accepted to Williams, and for the past few days, I have been wondering how good a fit Williams would be for my college needs. I'm sure that I want to go into medicine (applied to combined programs, but unfortunately was rejected from all of them, even after getting an interview), and I was wondering how well Williams fares in medical school admissions. I'm also a math/science person, and was wondering how good Williams science is compared to other schools? I am interested in research and "hard science". In terms of diversity, Williams only has a small % of Asians (single digit %). Most of that percent probably consists of Asian international students (which many times have little in common with Asian Americans). So I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience with diversity at Williams, or could tell me their experience as Asian Americans at Williams?... Thanks guys!

I’m pretty sure that % of Asians are Asian Americans. International Asians are included in the international %.

kaka, Williams kids do very well getting into the top graduate programs in the country.

and I believe that the Sciences are one of Williams’ strengths…

While still less than some of its peers, the Asian-American percentage has risen dramatically at Williams in recent years, and for the last few classes, has been well over 10 percent (last year 72/549 frosh were Asian-American, for example). None of the international Asians are counted in those figures.

Williams provides arguably the best undergrad math and science education in the country; certainly, it places more emphasis on math and science than the vast majority of liberal arts schools. It has two math professors who were the NATIONAL professor of the year in ANY discipline. It consistently beats its peers and Ivy league schools in terms of prestigious fellowships and research grants for undergrads, such as National Science Fellowships, Apker awards in physics, etc. The school has several hundred undergrads doing summer research on campus each summer and I think a big chunk of those are science students. Williams also has a spectacular newish unified science center and science library, which was completed about ten years ago.

If you do well at Williams, you’ll have no problem getting accepted at your choice of top medical schools. Obviously, to get into med school from anywhere, you need a very good GPA, but if you go to Williams you’ll have a bit more leeway there. Something like 85-90 percent of kids (with realistic profiles) applying to med school from Williams get accepted somewhere, most years.

Educationally and in terms of post-grad opportunities, Williams is as good as it gets for a science / math / pre-med person. I’d worry more, at this point, about whether it is the right fit for you in terms of your personality and lifestyle interests.
