Consolidated Answers for 10RS Math Problems

<p>Can this thread be a place where you can post SAT Math Problems not from the Blue Book, but from the Red/White books or any other prep books? A lot of the links for fill-in questions on Study-Hall are corrupt, and I really need some explanations to some of these problems. My math is horrible! :(</p>

<p>Anyway, I'll start the thread with some problems...</p>

<p>(Third edition, pg. 305 #22)</p>

<p>If 27^15=3^y, what is the value of y?</p>

<p>My friend kind of explained it to me, but I still don't really understand it.</p>

<p>(Third edition, pg. 305 #23)</p>

<p>If the perimeter of a rectangle is 10 times the width of the rectangle, then the length of the rectangle is how many times the width?</p>

<p>I actually figured this one out with equations, but don't really understand what I did...LOL gosh this is bad.</p>

<p>(Third edition, pg. 312 #10)</p>

<p>There are 3 roads from Plattsville to Ocean Heights and 4 roads from Ocean Heights to Bay Cove. If Martina drives from Plattsville to Bay Cove and back, and passes through Ocean Heights in both directions, and does not travel any road twice, how many different routes for the trip are possible?</p>

<p>I did 3^3, but again, I don't understand why I did that. </p>

<p>for the third question...u see...first u have 3 x 4 ways from platt to bay. so thats 12. if you can't travel back the same way, don't you think you should subtract that road when you travel back? so when you travel back you have (3-1) x (4-1) = 6 ways. because its refering going there and coming back you must 12 x 6 = 72.</p>

<p>for the second question...ok assume perimeter is 10 cm...and the width is 1. so that means 10 - 2 (2 width) = 8. dive the 8 by two 9because there are two length)..you get 4..... 4: 1 = 4 times</p>

<p>for the 1st question</p>

<p>do this...3^3(15) = 3 ^y thus y = 3 x 15 = 45.</p>

<p>Another way to look at question 2 is to use the perimeter formula and translate the problem to algebra:</p>

<p>2l + 2w = 10w</p>

<p>2l = 8w</p>

<p>l = 4w</p>

<p>isn't it the same as my? except much more clear? lol</p>

<p>Here's another one: </p>

<p>If p is a prime number greater than 3, which of the following is NOT a factor of 6p?</p>

<p>A. p^2
B. 6p
C. 3p
D. 2p
E. 3</p>

<p>The answer is A. and StudyHall says to divide 6p by all the possible choices...but why?</p>

I hope your question above is because of early<em>Monday</em>morning brain freeze - if not, you're in trouble :) .</p>

<p>The question needs you to find out which of the possible answers is a factor of 6p. If x is a factor of 6p, then (6p)/x needs to be an integer, and to check this, you need to do the division. Note that is prime, and > 3; it must be one of 5,7,11,13,17,...</p>

<p>A. 6p / p^2 = 6/p = (3)(2)/p, not an integer (since p is prime & > 3)
B. 6p / 6p = 1, an integer
C. 6p/ 3p = 2, an integer
D. 6p/2p = 3, an integer
E. 6p/3 = 2p, an integer</p>

<p>The reason studyhall tells you to divide is because it reveals the answer. You shouldn't have to actually "divide" the numbers though - you should look at the answers and immediatly see:</p>

<p>6p is obviously a factor of 6p
3p is obviously a factor of 6p
2p is obviously a factor of 6p</p>

<p>3 is obviously a factor of 6p (3 is a factor of the coefficient, 6, therefore a factor of 6p as well) </p>

<p>The answer must be A by elimination.</p>

<p>Answer to the problem presented above is (C).</p>

<p>Explanation being, xy = (yz)y, since x is equal to (yz). Finally, (yz)y = (y^2)z.</p>

<p>I don't understant third ed. pg 312, #9, with two overlapping circles inside a rectangle. The circles both have area of 10, with centers A and B. Basically, the circles overlap such that the circumference of each goes through the center of the other circle. The left side of circleB's circumference goes through circleA's center...and vice versa.</p>
