Consolidated Book List for Self-Studiers (texts and prep-books)

So after two weeks of diligently reading this forum for suggestions, and based on my own AP experience, I have compiled a list of the best resources to use on the following AP Exams if you're going to self-study.

I hope a lot of CC'ers find this list useful, as I myself would have loved this list weeks ago. I have also provided links and suggestions for textbooks (very useful if you're self-studying I find).

AP ART HISTORY:

Gardner's Art through the Ages, 12th edition (Amazon.com: Gardner's Art through the Ages (with ArtStudy Student CD-ROM and InfoTrac ) (9780155050907): Fred S. Kleiner, Christin J. Mamiya: Books), textbook

-The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern (Amazon.com: The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern (9780740768729): Carol Strickland: Books), basically a review book

-Barron's AP Art History (Amazon.com: Barron's AP Art History with CD-ROM (Barron's Ap Art History (Book & CD-Rom)) (9780764194634): John B. Nici M.A.: Books), this is a prep-book/review book of course

AP MACRO/MICRO ECONOMICS:

Essentials of Economics, Mankiw (Amazon.com: Essentials of Economics (9780324590029): N. Gregory Mankiw: Books), textbook

-Cracking the AP Economics Macro & Micro Exams, Princeton Review (Amazon.com: Cracking the AP Economics Macro & Micro Exams, 2010 Edition (College Test Preparation) (9780375429170): Princeton Review: Books), this is a prep-book

AP EUROPEAN HISTORY:

Modern European History, Viault (Amazon.com: Modern European History (0639785401056): Birdsall Viault: Books), this is a very helpful review book, the bible of AP Euro

A History of Western Society Since 1300 for Advanced Placement (Amazon.com: A History of Western Society Since 1300 for Advanced Placement* (9780312683214): John P. McKay, Bennett D. Hill, John Buckler, Clare Haru Crowston, Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks: Books), textbook

AP WORLD HISTORY:

World Civilizations: The Global Experience, Ap Edition (Amazon.com: World Civilizations: The Global Experience, Ap Edition (9780131732889): Peter N. Stearns, Michael Adas, Stuart B. Schwartz, Marc J. Gilbert: Books), textbook

AP COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS:

AP Comparative Government and Politics: a Study Guide, 4th edition (Amazon.com: AP Comparative Government and Politics: a Study Guide, 4th edition (9780974348179): Ethel Wood: Books), prep-book, considered the bible of Comp. Gov. & Politics

For now I'm done, I have some more suggestions that I'll post later (finding links and making this list in general has been exhausting :P ).

Feel free to make any suggestions and corrections, this is just a ruff list.

Note: If you are looking to buy any of these materials, I simply linked the newest, and consequentially, most expensive editions of the books. For any of the textbooks you could easily save $100 by buying a used, earlier edition of the book. I saved like $500 this year buying used textbooks and prep materials. The only book I bought new was the Ethel Woods Comp Gov book, which is adjusted to the new format of the exam.

Hope I've helped a few people out there! :)

Nice list  You should mention whether you need a textbook or not to study the AP. I’m finding that there’s disagreement between members on this forum on whether one need a textbook or not to study for the AP Economic exams.

But my suggestions:
AP Statistics:
The Practice of Statistics by Yates/Moore/Starnes
[Amazon.com: The Practice of Statistics: TI-83/84/89 Graphing Calculator Enhanced (9780716773092): Dan Yates, David S. Moore, Daren S. Starnes: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Practice-Statistics-Graphing-Calculator-Enhanced/dp/0716773090/ref=pd_sim_b_5)
& A barron’s prep book, but many suggest that a textbook isn’t needed.

AP World History:
Not too sure about Sterns but Traditions and Encounters by Bentley/Ziegler is amazing. It reads like a story and makes history very easy.
[Amazon.com: Traditions & Encounters: A Global Perspective on the Past. Fourth Edition (9780073406930): Jerry Bentley, Herbert Ziegler: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Traditions-Encounters-Global-Perspective-Fourth/dp/0073406937/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261985868&sr=1-4)

AP Calculus:
Not Calculus: Graphical/Algebraical/Numerical (sp?) but a book by Thomas/Finney 9e does a nice job. You can buy it used for very cheap since it’s no longer in print.

AP Biology:
Campbells 8e and Cliffnotes.

Great additions, Mr. Wheezy! I’ll add them to the list.

And about needing a textbook, I didn’t really think of that. I like textbooks b/c I feel they really go in depth and insure a high score on an AP. However, exams like Human Geography only need a simply prep-book.

Oh… I guess I can’t edit the original list. That sucks. I guess every once and a while I will combine everyone’s collective suggestions so people don’t have to read through like 60 pages to get suggestions :)

AP United States History:

AMSCO ([Amazon.com: United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination (9781567656602): John J. Newman: Books](http://www.amazon.com/United-States-History-Preparing-Examination/dp/1567656609/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261990780&sr=8-1))

REA’s Crash Course ([Amazon.com: AP U.S. History Crash Course (REA) (9780738608136): Larry Krieger: Books](http://www.amazon.com/U-S-History-Crash-Course-REA/dp/0738608130/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261990944&sr=1-1))

@082349: Oh wow, I spent all this time and there was already a list :stuck_out_tongue: Oh well, I think the list that has so far been constructed is a bit more complete- thanks guys!! And in regards to your new suggestions, those are excellent. Good structure to your list as well, I like it. Thanks for the help!

@leadlol: Good suggestions, did you self-study lit and comp? I am planning on doing so this year, and will buy your suggestions!

@sheep_disturber: you’re welcome! Those tend to be the most recommended books, and the books I am currently using. I really enjoy Viault’s book, very easy to read.

@keasbey nights: I’m glad you added suggestions for music theory! I don’t think there has been much discussion on that AP as far as self-study materials (I could be wrong since I haven’t actually taken the exam, but I haven’t seen much discussion myself).

Great list so far everyone!

WannaBYalie, although I’ve never taken AP Music Theory, I’ve tutored a number of students in it. I go to an arts magnet school as a music major, and I know a great deal of music theory. Take it from me - the Spencer book is the way to go. It teaches everything about music theory, from literally reading music to part-writing to 20th-century serialism.

@WannaBYalie:

Nope, I’m taking it as a class. It’s the textbook that our school uses, and the review book is the one I’m getting. =D
Hope self-studying goes well for you!

Do you need a text for Psych?

@ Bassir: No, a textbook is not necessary for psych. Barron’s is enough.

@leadlol: Thanks for the textbook rec! I didn’t really know where to start on that AP. I’m still considering whether or not I will take it.

@Keasbey Nights: Sounds like a good recommendation to me  Thanks for the post!

I have Myers, seems to me a bit superfluous.
