As I am international and have not won any scientific awards or have participated in any scientific ECs, MIT is probably the hardest school to get into. I am perfectly fine with this. MIT wasn’t too high up on my list anways. I don’t think I would fit in too well anyways. Congrats to the 1500 people and the rest. Guys lets hope for the best. Going off the MIT forum. For class of 2010, start your essays early and remember MIT is NOT commonapp so you have to write a ton of separate essays. I think essays make the difference in many cases. Congrats to those who got in! And to those who didn’t, we will go to Harvard and own one of MIT’s pranks :)

It’s not really a complaint or anything, it’s just what it is. Perhaps if I hadn’t gotten a C+ in a book-reading class last spring or a C in English mid-semester (it’ll be changed…but too late for admissions), things would be okay. Bs probably would have been acceptable enough, but the Cs dropped my GPA and class rank. I would have needed some superhook to get in with my current transcript stats, and I don’t have one. ANYWAYS. [/ul]**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: All I have to say it WOW and YAY!!! I was not expecting this. At all. This is tied for the top college (with Caltech!) that I applied for and got accepted to. I thought that I would never be offered a spot at MIT in general since it is so competitive and, as it seemed, out of reach. But another discouraging things was that I applied as a junior so I thought that there would be many more other more experienced and better-stats senior that would be applying. But WOW! Here it is. I had my Pittsburgh Regional FIRST Robotics Competition today until 5PM, so I rushed to look up MIT’s decision on my dad’s blackberry and when I saw I was soooo excited!

I was not thinking that I would get accepted to both Caltech and MIT, but now I am psyched!!! Sunny California and smaller school vs. Nuclear Engineering bachelors and world-known professors. Hmmmm… it’s going to be a hard decision but I think I’m going to try to go to PREFROSH and CPW. Now the major deciding factor is going to be financial aid.

My biggest obstacle was finding out how to write the essays/figuring out the topic. But my suggestion is to write about yourself from various perspectives so that the admissions committee will get to know you well. And I found, at least for me, that it is not necessary to spend a couple of months over an essay- you just have to get that writing spark and it will turn out to be a passionate, sincere essay. Go class of 2013!!!

Essays (subject and responses): Easily the strongest part of my app. I made an encyclopedia entry depicting myself as a creature and explained the effects of my grandmothers on me. I also wrote a poem about trig.
