General Comments:
Also got into Stanford and UChicago and likely letters from Yale/Brown. MIT got rickroll’d, Chicago got cheesed, and Stanford got Taylor Swiftboated.

[]Awards: AP Scholar w/ Honor
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly have no idea.
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:Odds are I’m not going to MIT. For those accepted, Congrats. If you were rejected, you’re probably going to succeed in life no matter what school you go to. [/li][/ul]

Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 2230 single-sitting (710 M, 720 CR, 800 W)
[]SAT II: 700 Physics, 780 Math II, 700 Literature

[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 4 - AP World Hist, 4- AP Physics B, 5 - AP Calc AB, 5 - AP Eng. Comp., 3 - APUSH
[/ul]Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Pretty good, but not outstanding or terribly unique.
[]Recs: Teachers ones were pretty good. Counselor’s was so-so, since she doesn’t know me very well.
[]Supplementary Material: Got a stellar one from my mentor at my internship.
[]Summer Activities: Internship at National Laboratory, Environmental leadership training camp with the Sierra Club, Football
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): 1/2 URM, legacy
[/ul]Personal[ul]
[]Location: NM
[]High School Type: Public
[]Ethnicity: Hispanic/Caucasian
[]Gender: Male
[/ul]Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Year-round internship at renowned National Laboratory grades 11/12, internship with school district’s web design department, math tutor at local middle school, did environmental work with the Sierra Club, Vice President of NHS, HS football grades 9/10, JV track 9th grade
[]Awards: National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar w/ distinction, National Hispanic Scholar
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think the internships really helped. The lab complex I intern at is nationally recognized, a major component in the Manhattan project, etc. I also helped to remodel and redesign our district website as a web intern. Computers are my thing, and I really demonstrated it through my activities and essays. The legacy and half-URM status didn’t hurt, either.
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Competition at MIT was EXTREMELY tough this year. I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have been accepted. Anybody who was accepted should feel that way. There were many qualified applicants for whom they simply didn’t have room. Best of luck to the rest of you.[/li][/ul]

Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 2370 (M - 800, CR - 800, WR - 770)
[]SAT II: Math II - 800, Physics - 800, Chemistry - 800
[]GPA: Probably around 4.6ish
[]Rank: Top 5%
[li]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 7 5’s on AP’s (counting the two physics C’s separately) [/ul]
[/li]

Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Probably the worst of all my applications… the short essay format didn’t really work for me. I did like the poem I wrote for the “Describe the world you come from” question though =)
[]Recs: One good (from physics teacher who had me for 2 years and liked me), one not-so-great (senior year history teacher since of my two humanities courses last year, one teacher retired and one course was online =/)
[]Supplementary Material: Viola and piano music supplements (with a really nice rec from my piano teacher)
[]Summer Activities: Governor’s School, online courses for credit, travel
[li]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Math and physics courses at prestigious university with decent grades?
[/li]

[/ul]Personal[ul]
[]High School Type: Competitive public… MIT doesn’t like us much, but a few people are accepted every year.
[]Ethnicity: Asian
[li]Gender: F[/ul]
[/li]

Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Science Olympiad, chamber music, orchestra (as principal violist), musical and other community service, others that I’m too lazy to list
[]Awards: Lots of state and national Science Olympiad awards, ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction, National Merit Finalist… I guess acceptance into Governor’s School counts?
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I just wasn’t too special… also, weak essays and rec.
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] sigh I guess I’m over being waitlisted… I was fairly upset at first, mostly because it was the first decision and many people I know (including one URM who UNEQUIVOCALLY was not deserving) were accepted, but whatever… It really is random. I know many people more qualified than I am who were outright rejected, and people less qualified who were accepted. I guess I’m glad I wasn’t rejected, since the subjective aspect of my MIT application was worse than most of my other schools, so I still have some hope… Anyway, congratulations acceptees! And to those (like me) who weren’t accepted, best of luck for April 1st! =)

Rejected

Stats:[ul]

[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB):GCE ‘A’ Levels - General Paper, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Game Theory, Project Work, Higher Chinese[/ul]

Subjective[ul]

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably didn’t show enough aptitude in Science and Technology
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Not too surprised, and therefore not too disappointed as well. Waiting on Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Else I’ll be accepting my offer from Oxford (UK). Cheers and good luck to everyone![/ul]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, essays, recommendations
[] Weaknesses: Lack of interview, somewhat generic EC’s, Grades are a little inconsistent
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected because there were better applicants from my school. Also my EC’s are average at best. Also being “asian” makes it just about impossible to get in here.[/li] [/ul]**General Comments: Start your college search in the summer. Stay organized and also make sure you have a clear idea of what the schools are looking for. If your time and money are going to be invested in completing these apps, you might as well make it the best damn application you can. Also once you send in your applications stop worrying and focus on the other things in your life. Being paranoid and worrisome will not affect your decision. You will know your decision in time, so there’s no use in fretting over it. **

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:
I definitely did not expect to get in. Especially because I had an awkward interview. This was my only rejection, but just because I didn’t apply to many uber-selective schools.
Accepted to Penn State Honors College, McGill University, Barnard College, and some crappy backups.
