[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: female, great achievements in the context of my school, summer research
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: It really just comes down to luck. All of you have done everything to the best of your abilities in high school and that will show on your application. It’s up to MIT to make the decisions, but you WILL end up at a great college and you can get wherever you want to in life because you already have the determination and hard work that it takes![/ul]

[]Essays: Fine and dandy.

[]Supplementary Material: None.
[]Summer Activities: Working for a violin shop in Mexico, other weird stuff.
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize):[/ul]Personal[ul] Hispanic, above average age (21), weird life.

[]Extracurriculars: Work, work, work, tutoring, studying most subjects on me own, search and rescue.
[]Awards:
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My academic record consisted of AP scores, SAT tests, and a transcript I prepared with the help of my mentor. It was probably difficult to make an objective appraisal of my learnin’ ability beyond my SAT scores - which, of course, aren’t a very good predictor at all.
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] I think I can do a quarter or two of community college and apply again early action. If I don’t get in then, I can apply again as a transfer. I think. Anyway, I should be able to show them a better picture with a few math/science classes at a CC.

[]Extracurriculars: XC (JV Captain), Track&Field (JV Captain), Music (4 instruments), BSA (Eagle Scout/Patrol Leader), Self-studying various college courses. I would delve into it more deeply, but it doesn’t really matter. Holistically, they’re great compared to the average applicant and this isn’t just in my opinion.
[]Awards: Nothing particularly phenomenal.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I had no major hook I guess. Everything else in my opinion was on par or even better for an accepted MIT applicant. I presume they didn’t want another Asian male interested in Math.
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I abhor affirmative action, but I won’t complain or do anything about it. It is what it is.[/ul]

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Haha, I’m just part of the gigantic pool of rejectees. Maybe I should have showed more passion for science in my essays. I’m not that disappointed since I started to lose interest in MIT after December anyways. :stuck_out_tongue:

National Merit Semi-Finalist (and Finalist)
National AP Scholar
Qualified for National Chemistry Olympiad (explained citizenship ineligibility in add. info)
National Honor Society (11-12)

Other
Counselor Rec: probably a bit generic considering my school is large and very few people know their counselors well…
Teacher Recs: Chem teacher (one of his top students, academic side of me prob.), US History teacher (good student, but knows a lot about my ECs and still tells me how cool it was that I played Purple Haze dressed up as Jimi Hendrix for a report, probably mentioned in rec…)
Essays: pretty good I think. main one was about my passion for music and chemistry tied together by a metaphor. another one about how a composer changed me as a person. another one about a lab method I developed during AP Chem class that inspired me to become an engineer (why engineering?). short one joking about how I’m really skinny and not super tall, but I’m big on the volleyball court.

[]Gender: Male[/ul]
Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: 2 years of chorus; a few plays; piano; trumpet; 1 week of community service in 2009
[]Awards: NHS, Cum Laude, Cum Laude Paper competitor, National Merit Semifinalist (I ended up being a finalist), AP Scholar with Distinction
[]Why you think you were accepted: I want to say that my essays were very me and i didn’t try pandering to the T in MIT: my transcript was enough proof of my mathematic and scientific interest: sweet grades in the toughest sciences and maths available. Yet, my creativity essay was about writing a story; my favorite activity was about piano-playing; my “your world” essay was about being a New Yorker, my midyear report had a funny, sheepishly self-deprecating quote from an old-timey movie.
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: My awards and academic achievements were on the pretty average or maybe even under-average side compared to some i’ve seen. But maybe it’s because I thought “there’s no way a non-scientist can get accepted” and did my own thing anyway that I seemed different in admission’s eyes. Good luck to the 2015ers![/ul]
