• Number of other applicants in your school: I’m the only person.
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I had some national math and science awards when I was a freshman in China. But no other awards.
Subjective:
• Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Founder of a school English newspaper in my school in China, founder of a diversity club when I was in school in America, tennis varsity No. 1 singles player, piano
• Job/Work Experience: none
• Volunteer/Community service: about 120 hours.
• Summer Activites: Nothing special. Lots of community service, and flying back and forth from China to America.

Writing (Write a brief description and rate quality on 1-10 Scale):
• Essays (include subjects):
o What You Do For Pleasure: An internship engineering project at the University of Kentucky (I attend high school in Kentucky.) 7/10
o Department at MIT: ECE!!! Passion for robots! 7/10
o Of What Trait are You Most Proud: Humor 9/10
o World You Come From: my family comes from poverty in China, and both of my parents are first generation college goers in China. I talked about how this background has inspired me to work hard and give back to the less privileged. 10/10
o Significant Challenge: My exchange year (my first year in America)
o Other: why I decided to become an exchange student in America and how that decision has shaped my entire life. (The ironic part is that I went to a small rural town and attended a Kentucky rural school, but the experience was so enriching.)
• Teacher Recommendation #1: AP Bio teacher last year at the school where I did my exchange program.
• Teacher Recommendation #2: AP Lit teacher in my current school.
• Counselor Rec: My Counselor said I’m one of the top few students he had encountered in 13 years or so.
• Interview: my interviewer said my story was very encouraging!
• Art Supplement: piano!!!

Other
• Date Submitted App: probably on the last day before the deadline
• State (if domestic applicant): Attend high school in Kentucky
• Country (if international applicant): China
• School Type: Small private
• Ethnicity: Asian
• Gender: Female
• Hooks: probably my unique experience and background, especially when comparing myself to other Chinese students.
• Major: ECE
• Incoming bracket: about 20 K a year (Yes, I need financial aid!)
Reflection
• Strengths: Unique schooling experience and how I overcame all the difficulties during my exchange year. SAT, GPA, AP loads, self-learning AP Calc BC/Physics C just for fun.
• Weaknesses: no amazing awards, changing high school every year in the past four years.
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no idea.
• What would you have done differently? Maybe the interview.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Only Dad and my English teacher encouraged me to apply to MIT, and honestly everybody else had literally told me that my application to MIT was an auto-rejection (I told my interviewer that, and he commented that I was very independent and persistent). Congrats to all who got in, and good luck to all who get wait listed! For those who are rejected, you guys are still as amazing as before, and don’t let one rejection letter get on you.

To people who will apply to MIT in the future: Just believe in yourself! MIT sees you more as a person than just scores or awards! GO MIT!

[] Interview: Not sure. (He was German, I’m from Poland.)
[li] Art Supplement: –
[/li]

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 01/01/2012

[] Hooks: those aren’t exactly hooks, but… low income (by my country’s standards), raised by a single-parent [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: nothing
[] Weaknesses: no awards
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I just suck. Got used to it already.
[] What would you have done differently?:

 • wouldn’t have started my application on the 12/30/2011
 • wouldn’t have written on the app that I don’t like science as much as I used to
 • wouldn’t have picked up a different major on the Part 1 of the app, than the one I wrote about
 • wouldn’t have written about a million of other stupid things
 • wouldn’t have cared about colleges as much - not worth it[/ul]

Other Factors: due to an odd way of giving out degrees at the time my mum got hers, I had to write she has a master’s degree. I wonder if MIT took it to mean I come from an academic background - that would be funny considering how my mother always asks me to shut up when I say something about Physics or related, lol.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Congratulations WaitingGirl =)
Snipersas, I hope you don’t mind, but your rejection helped me feel better about mine - your stats were amazing, I just don’t get it.

[] Essays (include subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: My cat Patches. More cute than intelligent. 8[/li][] Department at MIT: Aeroastro. A bit of humor, not a lot of science. 8
[] Of What Trait are You Most Proud: Helping people to learn, collaborative learning. Talked about studying for an AP Bio test with my peers. A lot of science and personality. 10
[] World You Come From: This covered several topics. My small town, my desire to live in a city, my volunteer group, my desire to learn many languages and eventually travel the world. Essentially how a small environment taught me to seek a more global perspective. 7
[] Significant Challenge: Auditioning for a musical. It always gives me a lot of anxiety but I love doing the show. I talked about how it was only rewarding because it was challening. 8
[] Other:[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: My AP Calc teacher who also taught me Algebra II. I also job shadow her. It was fantastic, I love her, she loves me. I did not see it, but it was definitely glowing.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: My AP English and English III teacher. We have had differences but he believes I am very intelligent. Probably not as glowing as the first.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably good. We often talked about my passions for science, math, aerospace engineering.
[] Interview: It was very good. My interviewer’s roommate had done programming for the shuttle that landed on the moon. I talked a lot about collaborative learning, intelligence with a sense of humor, and I don’t know what else. He seemed impressed with me and said I had hit on a lot of things that are very important to MIT.
[li] Hooks: My volunteering is mildly impressive. I have done nothing to make me stand out too much from the other MIT applicants.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Volunteering, interview, essays.
[] Weaknesses: Grades and test scores. I have gotten three B’s in High School, and my SAT II scores were somewhat low for MIT. And I was very worried because my science testing scores were low.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was myself throughout the entire process. The reason I applied to MIT was because everything about it resonated with me. In the same way, I resonate with MIT.
[] What would you have done differently?: Absolutely nothing. I am proof that you do not have to be a superstar genius to get into MIT. I’m pretty regular. Of course, I’m extremely intelligent and passionate, but that is a given if you’re applying. Don’t be afraid if you haven’t done anything major.[/ul]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I cannot even believe this is real right now! I am so excited. I really hope I can go to CPW. But it’ll be okay if you didn’t get in. You will find a fantastic group of people in a fantastic school and your life will be wonderful. Really.

Other Factors: Don’t know if this counts for anything, but both parents are scientists, and our family is originally from Russia.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Who doesn’t fill these out before hand? Well, this is the pre-decision script: with only 13 hours left to go, and five BattleStar Galactica episodes into the night, I’m freaking out about the release. In fact, the seriousness of these decisions seems to have just hit me. Good night for now. I wish all the best of luck! We’ll see it all tomorrow!

Post-decision script: Two friends were rejected, one from our school (without much science involvement) accepted. It’s surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be. Disappointing yes, but also a chance to learn something and a great journey anyhow. Hopefully I can make it off of the wait list! I’m thankful for the posts on the admissions blog, which help me keep going past this. Good luck to fellow wait-listed applicants, and congratulations to those accepted!

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, but the haircut one might’ve been a problem. I had trouble answering the question, so I went about it pretty lightly, which they may not have liked.
[] Weaknesses: TEST SCORES. Ugh don’t even want to talk about my SAT IIs. I meant to self-study, but it didn’t completely happen and it shows. They say your scores alone won’t ruin your chances, but I think they’d be wary of someone who got a 570 in Physics. It is MIT, after all.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Test scores, most likely. I want to try and ask them, if I can.

Studied for a USAXO. I made top 150 in chem with minimal studying outside of AP chem, even though I bombed the lab practical-- if I had prepared for chem/physics for several months, I would have a decent shot at top 20. Also, my later and essays for RD schools got much better.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: unique EC profile, good essays, pretty good recs, lots of AP
[] Weaknesses: Not your typical “fit” for MIT, as in I didn’t have much to show in the way of the sciences. Mediocre physics test scores (AP & SAT II) also probably a turn-off to a school like MIT.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See weaknesses
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Not sure really. I definitely gave it a good shot! I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to be a fly in the admissions room :)

Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Congratulations to all those accepted! I’m envious, but I also have no illusions that most of you had more to show for than I did. I’ve already been accepted to a top 10 school EA but still, MIT is MIT :). Anyways, I want to leave you all with a few words, which I believe are relevant regardless of acceptance of rejection. As cheesy as it may sound, we shouldn’t look at college decisions as the end of the road, but as the beginning of a new journey. Regardless of where you are accepted or you aren’t, what remains constant is whether you’re willing to continue to work hard and pursue your passions.

My daughter was rejected. Not able to give all that info, but I’ll give the general breakdown.

SAT: 790CR, 780M, 760CR, 2330 Total
Superscore: 770CR, 2340 total
SAT II: LIT 760, Chem 750, Math II 730
4.5 GPA
Class Rank - 6th out of 430
She took one AP course last year and two D/E classes, 6 AP courses this year. In IB program from 6th to 10th grade.

She is white, not that I know if you are tracking that in this thread or not.

My daughter’s ECs were pretty average, and her essays might not have been that inspired, because MIT really isn’t her first choice. Wellesley is her first choice, I hope she gets in.

That being said, I thought she had a chance. I thought it was a bit easier for girls, and I thought her stats might be good enough.

Oh well.
