[] What would you have done differently?: nothing really, I don’t feel like putting in the extra effort to do stuff just to get into a good college would have been worth it[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Some friends of mine got it (as expected) and they all did science-related stuff outside of school and really liked it! Best advice I can give to someone wanting to go to a tech school :)

[] SAT I (breakdown): 2400 first sitting

[] IB (place score in parentheses):
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics B, AP Statistics (lol), AP US Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Literature and Composition
[] Number of other applicants in your school: about 10
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): [/ul]
[/li]

Intel STS Top Ten
Intel ISEF 2nd Grand Award
National JSHS 1st Place
Single-author research paper published

** Subjective:**[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Last 1.5 years I lived for my research  Taught myself how to design and code computer simulations and slaved away at a problem in computational imaging from home. Also edited for an international high school literary journal for 3 years (currently Co-EIC), and transformed a lot of the ways we run things. Those two things are basically my whole life lol
[] Job/Work Experience:
[li] Volunteer/Community service:[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and rate quality on 1-10 Scale):[ul]
[] Essays (include subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Writing poetry. Tried to add some of the abstraction and lyricism I usually use here. 8[/li][] Department at MIT: Course 6-2 all the way. Talked about my fascination with integrating computational perspectives into traditionally qualitative fields, e.g. computational neuroscience, natural language processing, etc. Plus, they have Seth Lloyd the king of quantum computing at MIT…can’t pass that up  10
[] Of What Trait are You Most Proud: Ability to observe and recognize the potential in subtle details. 8
[] World You Come From: How immersing myself in a pure mathematics summer camp ironically woke me up from the spell of inapplicable idealization. It was only afterward that I got into applied mathematics and the intersection of math, imaging, and digital signal processing — the lines between purist theory and computation are rapidly being blurred, especially in the context of our data-drunk digital world. I think I conveyed the message well, but to be honest I think it was a HUGE stretch of the prompt and what “world” meant XD 7
[] Significant Challenge: How throughout my life people have told me it’s hypocritical to be both a rabid scientist and a devout Christian. To me I can’t have one without the other, and I discussed how I learned to embrace both in a single perspective. For me science is one of God’s most exquisite miracles, so pursuing scientific understanding and discovery is an inherent part of my faith  10
[] Other:[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: AP Biology/ROP Biotechnology teacher. Definitely decent, but I didn’t read it.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: American Lit Honors teacher. Ditto
[] Counselor Rec: Ditto
[] Additional Rec: I had two. One was from the managing editor of the literary journal I edit for, and the other was from a professor I presented my research to. He didn’t technically know me in any other context, but he was super excited and basically offered to write the letter so I assume it was good XD Actually I think both my additional recs were much more outstanding than my normal ones.
[] Interview: Pretty good, though that doesn’t mean much.
[] Art Supplement:
**Other: **[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Jan. 1. Actually, my transcript got lost in the hubbub of mail and faxes without me realizing for awhile, so technically I only completed the app Jan. 31 when I resent it :stuck_out_tongue:
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: about 1800, public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: about 120k
[] Hooks:[/ul] Girl going into CS and EE? Though that’s probably negated by the anti-hook of being Asian lol

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Research resume, particularly STS
[] Weaknesses: My high school has had a pretty awful yield rate for MIT (0/3-5 for multiple years) so recently they haven’t been very generous to us :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Definitely research
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Congrats to everyone  Can’t wait to meet you at CPW!

[] Income Bracket: >200k
[] Hooks: F? I hope that’s not the only reason I got accepted lol[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: scores, gpa
[] Weaknesses: I’m so…normal; not the best EC’s
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: LUCK?? Honestly did not expect this at all. I got rejected at caltech and waitlisted at Washu =.= T.T Those were the first 2 I heard back from (aside from EA). Over the weekend I was so scared that I was going to get rej/wl everywhere and that I might not even be going to college.
[/li]

There were many applicants from my school, a lot of them I believe were more qualified than I was/am. I honestly don’t know “why me.” Maybe it was the funny joke I put in my MYR because I didn’t have any updates. :stuck_out_tongue: I feel like I did show consistency in my application. This is so weirrrddddd
[li] What would you have done differently?: Worked on essays earlier; definitely weren’t the best they could be[/ul]
[/li]

Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: So excited and surprised. This is so surreal; I’m going to college! To all those who didn’t get accepted, you guys are all so qualified, MIT just doesn’t have the space to accept us all, unfortunately. I’m sure we will all end up at great places! :)

Writing (Write a brief description and rate quality on 1-10 Scale):[ul]
[] Essays (include subjects):
I don’t really know what he told MIT about himself but I can try to fill in some blanks
[] What You Do For Pleasure: He likes to watch college lectures online, he doesn’t like tv or movies unless they are documentary/historical, he plays xbox (I hope he did not tell MIT that, lol)
[] Department at MIT: Physics I guess, he wants to be an astrophysicicist
[] Of What Trait are You Most Proud: I don’t know what he would say but I could list a million
[] World You Come From: he had to leave school to care for me
[] Significant Challenge: probably caring for me and his brothers while maintaining straight A’s in all his courses.
[] Other:[/ul][li] Teacher Recommendation #1: Physics teacher, she loves him, probably good[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: Latin teacher, they seem to have a great teacher/student relationship, probably good
[] Counselor Rec: She was very angry when she wrote it (she was missing an office party I think), maybe not good?
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: Probably good, he seemed very impressed with him, we had driven him there and he came out and complimented me on the wonderful young man I raised
[] Art Supplement:
NA

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Don’t know
[] State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Cyberschool
[] Ethnicity: Puerto Rican/Mexican/Cuban/German
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: Don’t know what the limits are but he did apply for aid because of my illness
[] Hooks:[/ul] I am not sure what this means

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Teaches himself, self motivated, character, loves MIT, very mature
[] Weaknesses:
-His school only recently started offering AP courses. So he only managed to take 4.
He has had to teach himself AP courses when no teachers were available.
-His SAT scores were low because he did not complete the tests. Most of what he did answer was correct. He works slowly when it is not Math/Science.
-He did everything himself with no help from counselors and very little help that I could give. He probably made some mistakes in his applications. We knew nothing about preparing for college.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The others here obviously tested higher than he did.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] There is not too much I think he could have done differently. He was handed a lousy hand and he played it out the best he could. But it just wasn’t MIT good.

Other Factors: Where we live people put sports ahead of academics and he is unable to participate in sports because of a heart condition. He caught a lot of flak for it but he never cared. He still pursued his passion in spite of the environment he was in. He has never found anyone in our area that shares his STEM interests. So, lucky me, I have had the pleasure of my son trying to teach me about everything from string theory, neutrinos, quarks, boson particles… to poor old Schrodinger’s cat. lol

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Congratulations to all of those who were accepted (and those not accepted). You all obviously worked very hard and should be proud of yourselves. I don’t know why or who collects this data but I hope this helps.

I prefer not to talk about my ECs, but they weren’t Intel level or what not. Most were at the state level. I’m elated regardless because MIT is great at what I want to major in- economics and physics.

[] What would you have done differently?: Honestly don’t know. I could have written better essays, but I think the issue was just not doing enough to demonstrate a passion for the sciences [/ul]

Other Factors:

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Wasn’t shocked, still unhappy. MIT was a top school for me. Thankfully I have a likely to Columbia, but I’ll be waiting eagarly for 3/29 and 4/1. Congratulations to all those accepted. You truly deserved it. **

Accepted… and I’m not really sure how.
SAT I: 2100ish, I dont remember my exact score
SAT II: 770/780? for Math II and US Hist
Unweighted GPA: 3.95ish
APS: 5 5’s and 2 4’s
National merit finalist/ all-american for my sport all 4 years of highschool

I worked pretty diligently in a lab over two summers and came to some really interesting conclusions but I never participated in any science olympiad type things or one in big science related awards. I’m also a pretty good athlete (I’ve trained at least 20 hours a week year round since I started high school) which I think played a big role in my admission. I’m being recruited at a few other big D1 schools but unfortunately MIT doesn’t have my sport :(. I did talk a lot about how my sport shaped me, though.

Essays (include subjects):
What You Do For Pleasure: Hike and climb (boulder).
Department at MIT: Biology
Of What Trait are You Most Proud: Being a loyal friend
World You Come From: Unique World: Was about Growing up with my Dad, who was always traveling, and how seeing so many different places and perspectives taught me to think differently.
Significant Challenge: Was about my coming to terms with the risks that are associated with my sport and using one my teammates and my coach as a role model to do so. I thought this was my best essay.
Other: I felt the rest of my essays summed me up pretty well.

I think my recommendation letters were great! But i didn’t see any of them so I can’t be sure.

Overall, I didn’t try to do anything that would impress the admissions officers; I just tried to be myself. All of my essays were really honest and “me” and I think that is what made the difference.

I hope this gives you all some hope because I really dont think I’m the typical, exceptional applicant who gets into MIT. Just be honest and passionate!
You can do it guys!
