He has had to teach himself AP courses when no teachers were available.
-His SAT scores were low because he did not complete the tests. Most of what he did answer was correct. He works slowly when it is not Math/Science.
-He did everything himself with no help from counselors and very little help that I could give. He probably made some mistakes in his applications. We knew nothing about preparing for college.

[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] There is not too much I think he could have done differently. He was handed a lousy hand and he played it out the best he could. But it just wasnt MIT good.

Other Factors: Where we live people put sports ahead of academics and he is unable to participate in sports because of a heart condition. He caught a lot of flak for it but he never cared. He still pursued his passion in spite of the environment he was in. He has never found anyone in our area that shares his STEM interests. So, lucky me, I have had the pleasure of my son trying to teach me about everything from string theory, neutrinos, quarks, boson particles to poor old Schrodingers cat. lol

I prefer not to talk about my ECs, but they weren’t Intel level or what not. Most were at the state level. I’m elated regardless because MIT is great at what I want to major in- economics and physics.

National merit finalist/ all-american for my sport all 4 years of highschool

I worked pretty diligently in a lab over two summers and came to some really interesting conclusions but I never participated in any science olympiad type things or one in big science related awards. I’m also a pretty good athlete (I’ve trained at least 20 hours a week year round since I started high school) which I think played a big role in my admission. I’m being recruited at a few other big D1 schools but unfortunately MIT doesn’t have my sport :(. I did talk a lot about how my sport shaped me, though.

Significant Challenge: Was about my coming to terms with the risks that are associated with my sport and using one my teammates and my coach as a role model to do so. I thought this was my best essay.
Other: I felt the rest of my essays summed me up pretty well.

I think my recommendation letters were great! But i didn’t see any of them so I can’t be sure.

Overall, I didn’t try to do anything that would impress the admissions officers; I just tried to be myself. All of my essays were really honest and “me” and I think that is what made the difference.

I hope this gives you all some hope because I really dont think I’m the typical, exceptional applicant who gets into MIT. Just be honest and passionate!
