Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Solid grades, extracurricular’s, standardized scores
[] Weaknesses: Obviously many since I got rejected :P, perhaps international status had increased competition?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: MIT is a crapshoot at best for everyone, I guess I’m just not ideally fit for the school haha.
[] What would you have done differently?: One of my greatest regrets in high school was barring myself from some of my close friends to study/prepare for MIT/ ivy leagues etc. etc. I really wish I managed my time better, as I’m not as close with those friends anymore, but I’m rekindling those friendships again :). [/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: You can only move forward, there’s no sense in dwelling in the past. MIT had been my dream school, but it’s off to Georgia Tech for me now! I hope future generations of MIT applicants can use my stats as an example for…stuff. Much love to those admitted <3

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]

[] IB (place score in parentheses): N/A. Our school doesn’t provide IB
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP courses and college-level courses provided, probably one of the most difficult courseloads available…
[] Number of other applicants in your school: About 15 methinks, one accepted.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 2010 Int’l Mathematics Olympiad Gold Medalist, 2009/2010 Asian-Pacific MO Silver Medalist, and many other awards / 3-year consecutive USAMO Qualifier (couldn’t take the test because I’m not a US Citizen and live overseas), AMC12A/B two-year consecutive school winner (both tests, highest score 135/132), AIME 13. Scored as 4th individual place on 2010 Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament.[/li]And some other non-math awards too, but much emphasis was on math.[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): (Founder/Head) Inter-school online math community, (Head) School mock trial club (led the team to win national tournaments), 3-year homeroom class president, Member of school hiphop crew (rapper), etc… those were the majors

[li] Volunteer/Community service: Organized classes to teach mathematics to fellow students in school, translated various material in Korean and published them free of charge online to disadvantaged students[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and rate quality on 1-10 Scale):[ul]
[] Essays (include subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: (7) Rapping as something spontaneous[/li][] Department at MIT: (7) Mathematics - the passion that guided me, the passion that will guide me: I think I was true on this essay.
[] Of What Trait are You Most Proud: (9) Learning through continuous ‘questioning’ and taking nothing for granted. I personally reallllllly liked this essay.
[] World You Come From: (8) About my school, and how the people there were open on active discussions and helped form who I am.
[] Significant Challenge: (7) Grouping people as a leader - I wrote about a project I initiated at the online math club.
[] Other:[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: Excellent. Our school’s math teacher, I personally respect him as a mentor, and he really liked me too.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Very good(?). My Spanish teacher. There’s a story - I screwed my freshman spanish scores, because I didn’t like it. But as time passed, I began to like it more and more, and I changed - not only my scores, but my attitude in-class - she really liked my change and said I was among the most impressive in the class. But then, I did screw my freshman spanish scores, so the rec letter couldn’t have been excellent…
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent. I really like and respect her, and to what I know of, she does too. Talked with her often, and took her summer classes too. She believed in my potentials as one of the best in the class(she said to me often). Believe this’ll have been great.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: So-so. I tried to show as diverse parts of me as I could, and maybe this backfired, but I thought the interview was okay.
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 12/29/11
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): South Korea
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: >$150K
[] Hooks: IMO Gold medalist, and different leadership activities.[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: IMO Gold medalist. Outstanding in math, but having interest (and doing great) in many other things too - that was the concept of my whole college application (not just MIT).
[] Weaknesses: Still don’t know. Maybe I tried to show too many sides of me in the application that it didn’t show a sense of unity.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Still don’t know.
[] What would you have done differently?: Maybe a greater emphasis on my math activities? But if I reversed time (and without the knowledge of the outcome), I would’ve done the same. [/ul]

Other Factors: Nothing much…

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Congrats to everyone who got accepted. Thought I’d stand a good chance, but maybe I was just too arrogant. I’m still hoping (very much) that a waitlist stands a chance, because MIT’s a really great school, and I would’ve loved to get in. Boston’s a great place
Oh and for those of you CCers who believe you didn’t make it to MIT because you don’t have an int’l olympiad, there’s a bunch of people (including one from our school) that get in without one, and also some people (like me) who don’t get in with one… anyways, good luck on the rest of your application.
The waitlist letter helped me think more about who I am, and who I should be. Whichever college I end up in, I should learn to be more modest and hard-working… If I live my life hard and successful enough, maybe one day(if I’m not picked from the MIT waitlist), MIT might regret waitlisting me :stuck_out_tongue: A big congratulations again to everyone who got accepted!

[] Why you think you were accepted: My grades and SAT scores did not disqualify me as a viable candidate, I excel at extracurriculars, have a strong music supplement, have an interesting background, show leadership, consistency, and had an excellent interview.

Reflection
Strengths: The awards and extracurriculars particularly stood out, including 1st place at the Natl. Scrabble Championship as well as qualifying to USAMO. Also, the volunteering and interview helped.
Weaknesses: Essays were probably meh. SAT reading and writing scores are weak, and I have those 2’s on AP Lang and AP Lit. Almost made Red MOP but failed #5 on USAMO.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was pretty surprised. Got waitlisted at Caltech but I have a feeling that MIT is a better fit for me anyway.

This is very late, but…

[] Essays (include subjects):
I wrote about my unique hobby of making scoubidous, a.k.a lanyards. Also wrote about my social challenges. My writing skills were probably mediocre in my opinion, but I did get good feedback from other people.
[] What You Do For Pleasure: Make scoubidous, play piano and guitar
[] Department at MIT: back when I applied, Materials Science and Engineering
[] Of What Trait are You Most Proud: Being able to overcome my shyness
[] World You Come From: Using the best of the courses that the community college offers and taking a lot of math classes and later wanting to explore Chemical Engineering.
[] Significant Challenge: I couldn’t speak Korean and was an outcast. Then after a lot of effort I was able to carry conversations and am now treated with respect.
[] Other:[/ul][li] Teacher Recommendation #1: English Teacher who I had for 3 classes during the past 2 years. I saw a glimpse of it, and she did NOT check off “outstanding” on all the categories… she gave me something like “need to improve” in some of them.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: Science teacher who I had in 10th grade and who was my teacher for Materials Engineering. I don’t know what he put.
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t know.
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: I personally thought the conversation was a bit awkward, and I did not know what to expect. For one, the person who interviewed me was wearing casual clothes and flip-flops while I was dressed in business casual. Also, we ended talking about me taking a class at Harvard since it wasn’t offered at MIT. And for one of the other topics we talked about, he ended up jotting down the fact that I was really shy.

[] Strengths: being able to talk to other shy people, high math and science scores
[] Weaknesses: somewhat low scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: After I visited MIT for the preview weekend, I realized there were a lot of people who I could relate with and the culture in general was something I really liked. Maybe in a way the interview really helped.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] spend less time stressing over SATs and focus more on ACTs which I was actually better at.

[] Weaknesses: asian boy from california. statistically, we have like less than 5% admit rates. mit friendzoned a lot of my friends :frowning:
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i didn’t embellish details. i told everything truthfully, humorously (well, i laughed at my jokes), and concisely.
[] What would you have done differently?: join the debate club and do more with key club. and not wear a white shirt to the interview[/ul]

Other Factors: i might have made an admit officer laugh! or cringe distastefully at my puns. i had an average of 1 pun per every 4 sentences throughout my essays (and 0 good puns per application)

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: don’t take life too seriously and do enjoy yourself! just don’t say ‘yolo’ and i’ll promise to treat you (relatively) nicely once i take over the world (cue pinky and the brain theme song).

also this stuff with square brackets and formatting text is stoopid. why can’t we use carets like normal web developers? (okie, socially well adapted web developers may not exist, but standards compliant web developers?)**
