Consolidated list of lesser-known college programs?

I'm a rising senior, and through research and mail/emails from colleges, I've learned about some programs that I never knew existed. To give you some examples of what I'm talking about, in the past few days/weeks/months, I have learned about: international travel opportunities like the dual BA program with Columbia/Sciences Po and NYU in Abu Dhabi, amazing scholarship programs like Morehead-Cain at UNC and McDermott Scholars at UT-Dallas, cool "Honors" college programs like College of Creative Studies at UC-Santa Barbara, etc, etc. The list of these options that I never knew existed goes on and on, and I'm sure that there are so many more that could be a perfect match for me that I don't even know about.

Is there a thread/website that has a list of these opportunities? Since I'm compiling my list of colleges and programs that I want to apply for this fall, so having a list like this would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance :)

There is no one easy list. However if you know your major and some of the parameters that are important for you (cost, rural/urban/suburban, size, etc.) you can run any of the college matching search engines and then check out the websites of the places that turn up.

Although many of the colleges on the list now accept less than 50% of applicants this thread is great: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1299462-looking-beyond-rankings.html

The reality is, there are so many schools with incredibly unique programs that it’s hard to list them all. For instance, Emory houses Oxford College a two year LAC but it also plays host to a primate lab, multiple ecology opportunities, the Carter Center, an internship program with the CDC, etc. If you do have a special interest, you can post it here and maybe someone will suggest colleges which are extremely strong in the field.

Yeah, I figured that there wasn’t going to be anything, but it was worth a shot.

@whenhen-
I’m in interested in doing Art History, French, or Psychology as an undergrad, but I actually plan to go on to medical school afterwards. Having said that, I’m very unsure about my future goals. Medicine is what I’m looking at right now, but I could very easily choose to go a different direction. I’m not even sure about what I want to do as an undergraduate - I have a lot of interests, and I honestly think I would be perfectly happy in just about any major/minor possible (i’m pretty equal in all 4 core subjects) so I don’t think I’ll decide on a major until I’m actually started with college. Because I’m so unsure, it’s hard to focus my search on a particular major or career path.

Another example of something that I just happened to read about is Plan II Honors at UT-Austin. I no longer live in Texas, but when I did, that was one of my top choices.

That thread is actually really interesting.
Also, what are you studying at OU? I actually just moved from Texas to SoCal but I had siblings who went graduated from OU this year. It was my other top choice for a school before the move, because they have great National Merit Scholarships.

That’s fine. One of the most popular majors for college freshmen is “undecided” so if you’re not sure about what you want to study/do, you’ll be in good company. Since you’re now a resident of California, or will be when you apply, you should check out some of the UCs. Many of them are all around outstanding schools with numerous opportunities for undergrads across a variety of fields. Given that you seem to be interested in some of the humanities, I’ll throw out a recommendation for Emory as it not only houses a phenomenal French department but also the on campus Carlos Museum where many art history students volunteer. Here’s a link to its merit scholarship program which, as a potential California NMF, you’d be a good candidate for: [Emory Scholars | Emory College of Arts and Sciences Admission](Admission | Emory University | Atlanta GA)

As far as OU goes, I’m studying geology with a possible minor in the History of Science. I’m not in the honors program but know a few students, including one NMF, that are. The NMF is currently starting her anthropology thesis and loves the program. If you do qualify for NMF (no idea how that works), make sure to apply to OU as a possible safety. I’m also about to send you a PM.
