General Comments & Advice:
I think one thing that helped me a lot was this summer program I went to Camp College @ TCU. It’s not very prestigious or anything (only 3 days long and I don’t think I even mentioned it in my app) but it really got me out of that mindset that I had to be this perfect applicant rather than myself. It got me to really look at who I was as a person and got me to understand that being rejected wasn’t the end of the world.

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket Range:100k+
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Does USAMO count for MIT? Not really?[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: USAMO. Strong math science background. HSHSP and research. Objectives in general.
[] Weaknesses: My essays were pretty bad - honestly, I lost all motivation when I got a Stanford acceptance, and so my essays sort of crumbled.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It was USAMO.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
Obviously do what you love, make high school count, yes, but also make sure you have some fun doing it; you don’t want to look back on it as four years thrown away to reach a goal, but four years you spent reaching your goal while doing things you loved. Also, to all of you who were accepted, congratulations, but the hard work starts here. To those of you who didn’t make it, remember that MIT is just a means to success, and that if anybody is going to be successful, it’s based more on who they are than where they go for school.

Acceptees, have fun in Cambridge. Try not to study too hard :stuck_out_tongue: I probably will not be joining you - West Coast Best Coast.

Decision: Accepted

[] World You Come From: A really great environment. Superb.
[] Significant Challenge: Homeschooling for a year was so rewarding, but a risky choice indeed! It paid off!

[] Recommendations (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: Read it. Really really great. (Physics)[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: Didn’t get to read it, but it was probably even better than the science one. (Language)

Reflection[ul]
This was my first venture into the academic world outside my own state – I thought my academics were pretty good until I started applying for top colleges and found out that there is a big world outside my state and a lot of really smart and talented students. I do not meet other top students at this level in my neighborhood and am really looking forward to MIT.
[] Strengths: Good single seating SAT scores as a junior and my 4.0 UW GPA including college courses. Also my job where all my peers were all junior and senior college students or grad school students and none of them knew that I was only a high school student. Then again, maybe my machining skills and the nitromethane powered potato cannon carried the day.
[] Weaknesses: My high school did not offer the strength of curriculum that most MIT applicants have and my state does not focus on STEM - it sends very few students to top STEM universities. Forget about my school or town, an average of only 2 students per year get into MIT from my whole state.
[] Why you think you were accepted: I am really am not sure. My stats stand out locally but not in this group of applicants. I did step outside my school to pursue things not available in my school. I took all the available honors and concurrent courses and completed two technical pathways instead of one. I took college classes in the summer and also worked in a technical job. My hobbies and my work experience probably helped a lot because of all the practical skills they have given me. Whatever it was, I am thankful.
[li] What would you have done differently? I don’t think I would have done anything differently. My school is technically focused , more practical than theoretical, but it was a great education for me. I feel I was able to learn what I needed to on my own when it was not available through my school and I had the opportunity to use what I learned to add to the overall experience of my fellow classmates. [/ul]
[/li]Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
I don’t think I’m in a position to give advice – other than to remember to brush and floss regularly. There were a lot of great applicants – Congratulations to all who were accepted and for those of you who were not, you will do well wherever you end up.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Incredibly effective leadership qualities. I have shown through as a leader in all of the math, track, and band activities which I participate in. Also, my passion for math was extremely well evident through my application.
[] Weaknesses: Maybe that SAT score? Maybe a total lack of accomplishments in science on my application? Maybe that I got injured my sophomore/junior
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Too many applicants, not enough spaces. Being deferred just means I made the academic cut, so I think they chose who they thought were the best fits, and they didn’t think I was one.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
Not submitted MIT first because my essays weren’t as prepared. Also, I would’ve done more research for the interview so that I’d have more to talk about.
Eh… beyond that, I would’ve had something to show that I’m at least capable in the sciences. I think having only math, and not anything incredibly outstanding in math gave them a little less confidence that I’d be a good fit.
Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Don’t stress. I believe that often the people who are rejected from these schools are rejected because they’re not seen as a good fit. I don’t think that the college is often wrong, as then know what it’s like in their environment.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personality, sports, GPA.
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores, essays.
[] Why you think you were rejected: Probably I couldn’t convey my passion for science effectively. Didn’t spend much time on the application and couldn’t give my 100%.
[] What would you have done differently?: I would have spent more time on my application had I known about the opportunity earlier. I would have paced myself for tests and hard work required to qualify as a strong applicant. I, however, learned a lot through the process. [/ul]

Other Factors: As I came to realize the opportunities to get into MIT at a very late stage, I couldn’t give it my best shot. I was enrolled in a local, yet reputed school that follows State board syllabus. My school did not have wide extracurricular offers; It was purely academically oriented. I first enrolled into IIT JEE coaching and was unaware of the outside world. But as I got to know about opportunities, I paced myself to go for it no matter how long the shot because I knew that I would better fit the atmosphere in U.S. I was not much of a nerd, but an aspiring all-rounder who loves science.

General Comments & Advice: Do what you love, not what the university/college loves. Remember, you are doing it for yourselves. The admissions officers will come to realize if you’re truly passionate about your work. Do not forcefully work on something just because you think that the university will find it impressive. Even if you get admitted by doing so, chances are that you won’t thrive there. Numbers may be impressive, but there’s more to a person than that. Work on your application and delineate a vivid outline of your personality. Universities and colleges take students who they think will make the most out of their opportunities and succeed in life. They look for hints of untapped greatness if not for solid evidences.
Finally, with a positive attitude, one can succeed anywhere. Einstein and Thomas Edison didn’t go to MIT, but they’ve still revolutionized the world.
Just do your part and write honest, heartfelt essays. Just as universities select applicants whom they think would be the best fit, we must struggle towards what we deem as our best fit. The process is mutual at best. So make sure you mean what you say and do what you want.

[] Essays: (Going to describe in a very rudimentary way; imagine the following being much more polished!)[list]
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Mushrooms (the study of, not the use to get high via), 8, I think they considered it endearing or at least interesting?[/li][] Department at MIT: Chemical engineering, 9, began with an anecdote about how I first discovered my love of science and then how engineering offered action for a previously idle me. Ended with how chemical engineering was a perfect combination of using science to benefit the world. Much less cliche sounding though.
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Adaptability, 10, reworked the story of the tortoise and the hare to give an impression of a little difficulty in youth being a good thing, as the hare will face it later and must learn to handle it. Talked about how I’ve searched for stability, but that that search entails difficulties along the way, and how being adaptable is integral to reaching stability. Linked being adaptable to being confident that I can handle setbacks.
[] World You Come From: How science and benefiting others came together, 7, linked seeing my mother’s happiness whenever I created something brought me the desire to create. Spoke of teachers, clubs, and my family cultivating that desire.
[] Significant Challenge: Mother dying, 10, began with anecdote of being in hospital with my sick mother at Christmas. Then began in the same way, saying 2 years later, only focusing that she did die and that I was now without any parents. Stated that although I could not “overcome” the challenge in the sense that I could not bring back the dead, I continued to live and provide strength to my grandmother; provided my grandmother will to live, further.

[] Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Math team, Varsity sport 11 & 12, JV’s for fun in other season, your average mix of community service (not great, few leadership, didn’t emphasize in essays), lots of non-academic stuff I didn’t include

General Comments & Advice:

I’m not surprised at all. I woke up at 5:30 AM to check it and was already expecting a rejection. I spent almost no time on my application; I wasn’t even planning on sending it in until the week before. It’s always sad though to see the “I’m very sorry” email so sighhh.

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who got in, you deserved it. And to those who didn’t, don’t worry, you’re amazing and you’ll do amazing things someday. I think the rejection didn’t hurt as much because I got Caltech last week (I still don’t know how I got in…) but I would have loved to see a congratulations instead of a sorry :(
