Significant Challenge: Tennis (I’m not athletic, at all, but pointlessly worked my butt off until I became captain?.. wow lamee)
Additional Essay/QB Essays: a lame abstract about my research, and more useless awards and another SAT II subject score because they couldn’t fit into the boxes
Recommendations (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Teacher Recommendation #1: Math teacher for 3 yrs: I gave him the recommendation very last minute… he was not happy

Reflection
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: everything
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: rejected because I’m stupid

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: It’s 2 days after decisions have been released, and I am still so stoked. I got deferred at Harvard early, so I completely lost hope in the college admissions process. At the end of the day, though, I am SO SO SO happy to have gotten in to one of my top choices for college. The only thing that’s left is to wait for the end of March and beginning of April to roll around. Congrats to everyone who got in, and to everyone who didn’t, don’t lose hope because like I said, college admissions to top universities are a crap-shoot. The process is completely unpredictable and even random. To juniors and below, just do what you love (:

[] Strengths: grades (only a few A-'s in high school), standardized test scores, unique background
[] Weaknesses: LOTS of people applying from my school, lack of leadership in ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: No idea, I am still in shock
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
On your application, BE YOURSELF. I am certainly not a very science/technology oriented person, and I did not try to make myself seem like one. To all those who were not accepted, I know it may have been your dream school for many of you, but do not take it to heart. This does not define you as a person, and you should still be proud of all your accomplishments. By September, when you are attending another amazing school, this will all be forgotten. :)

[] What would you have done differently?:
Realized that getting good grades was important before my junior year in high school.[/ul]
Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Regardless of how big of a reach your dreams seem for you, never give up trying to achieve them. So I got Waitlisted at MIT. These last few days I’ve been thinking about how in the end it doesn’t really matter whether I got in or not; the journey to get to where I am today has truly been an amazing experience. Reaching for MIT inspired me to really re-evaluate what I was doing in life and especially school. I overcame challenges and tried to beat the odds stacked against me. I may not have made it, but I got pretty damn close. I’ll take my spot but I’m not gonna worry about this anymore. In the end I know I did the best I could have done and that is enough for me.

My advice is to really really make your case in the Midyear Report if you are deferred. Keep up your grades senior year and be very sincere in both your essays and correspondences with Admissions. The best thing you can do is to show dedication and passion for what you do.

I wish I had known about MIT earlier. Not get an interview.[/ul]

General Comments & Advice:
It’s funny how the valedictorian from my school got into Princeton, but got rejected from MIT. I feel kind of bad too because my interview was on my birthday and the EC acted really rude during the interview. I was depressed because I had a different perspective of MIT and their community before I had my interview. My EC was racist in many ways. For example, he asked me If I was a Questbridge Finalist. I said no and he basically told me that my chances were slim to 0%. He started to tell how hard MIT was and that admissions were becoming a joke in a certain way because MIT used to accept the smart and brilliant kids back on his day and now they accept based on gender and ethnicity to look good in rankings, etc. At the end he told that no one will probably get in from this area and I was completely destroyed. I was really sad and I told my parents that I didn’t want to apply anymore, but they encouraged me to apply. I wish I had recorded the interview. I guess I have to stand up and fight for what I want and not let other people discourage me from succeeding in life…

[] I’m not going to give these ratings just because there’s no remotely objective way to do that, but I’ll put down subjects and thoughts
[] Essays:
[] What You Do For Pleasure: Bananagrams! Haha I enjoyed writing this, but I can’t see how anything unique could be bad.
[] Department at MIT: Course 18 (Math). This might have helped me - I ran into Professor Abhinav Kumar this summer and ended up sitting next to him for dinner/talking to him for a while. I name-dropped him in this and talked about working with him via UROP.
[] Trait Most Proud Of: The ability to see life in mundane objects. I connected that to a passion for math. It was a stretch - I had a hard time writing this essay. It ended up being alright, but probably my worst.
[] World You Come From: India and volunteering at the charity in India. It had personal anecdotes but also ran the risk of falling under the “omg look I have culture!” umbrella.
[] Significant Challenge: Failing miserably at a research project this summer. It was a modified version of my Common App essay, so it had decent foundation, but the 200 words of cuts detracted from its power pretty significantly.
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays:[/ul]
[] Recommendations (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: Math teacher! We went to Toronto together for TEDx and talk constantly.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: History teacher! No personal relations outside of the classroom, could have been semi-generic.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea. This could have been really generic and it also could have been fantastic. Probably closer to the former.
[] Additional Info/Rec: One from summer program director, one from Indian charity’s founder. Both showcased leadership, I think? [/ul]
[] Interview: It was really fun! Honestly, the lady who interviewed me was a doll - I can’t imagine anyone interviewing badly with her.

[] Income Bracket Range: Not getting any FA for sure
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athlete, development): I hear that Indian males who do math are really rare (none)[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: USAMO? I don’t know - the math-major extrovert with a ton of public-speaking experience isn’t too conventional
[] Weaknesses: MIT has a surplus of Asian male math applicants, and fitting that mold is not a great way to make yourself appealing. Also, relatively little sports/work involvement.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Ahh this entire app was math-centric - three of my essays were directly about math and a fourth was about tutoring in math. I think that that animated my passion, turning it into more than something on my resume.
[] What would you have done differently?: [/ul]

Other Factors:

**General Comments & Advice: MIT is well-known for how diverse its intellectual spirit is. Don’t display how you’ll blend into it - emphasize the fact that you’ll provide your own unique piece to it. **

[] Strengths: SAT/AP scores, I thought my essays and interview were good
[] Weaknesses: Nothing fantastic – I haven’t done any research, no USAMO or anything
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think they probably just liked me – not enough to accept me EA though, hahaha. I’d like to think being gay didn’t help, but I’m aware it might’ve been.
[] What would you have done differently?: I probably would’ve worked on my app earlier. [/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: By far the most important thing is to be yourself, as cheesy as that may be. I would much rather be rejected for being who I am than be accepted for being someone I am not, and if you are your genuine self on your applications, acceptances become a lot more meaningful. If it isn’t meant to be, it isn’t meant to be. In fact, I probably can’t go to MIT, but the financial aid package letter tomorrow will either confirm or deny that. Congrats to everyone accepted, and no matter what happens, you can make what happens to you work out!

[] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):[/ul] Nothing
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Interview, Art Supplement
[] Weaknesses: Essays, Essays, Essays, and Essays (Honestly, of all the essays I sent out, this was the only set I was not happy with).
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly in retrospect I’m not quite sure how I even made it to Waitlist. My only theory is that they liked my composition enough to not put me in the reject pile.
[li] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Honestly nothing. The reason I couldn’t get the essays is because I’m not a great fit, and in retrospect I recognize that.
[/li]

Where else were you accepted/rejected:
Accepted: U Chicago EA, SUNY schools, RIT, UMaryland
Waitlisted: MIT (obviously), WUSTL (although I’m not accepting the waitlist offer so I suppose this is more of a rejection really)
Rejected: Nowhere yet
Waiting On: Stanford, Harvard, Prineceton, UPenn, Cornell

General Comments & Advice:

  1. Honestly from what I’ve been seing a rejection, acceptance, and waitlist aren’t necessarily a measure of how smart you are, or how succesful you’re going to be. Schools will take you if they think you’re a good match.
  2. Write your applications BEFORE you hear back from schools. I heard back from UChicago EA, and as a result of how happy I was about that, my MIT essays all were a mess.
To the waitlist: A waitlist from MIT is not necessarily a rejection. It’s a “maybe, if we have room”. There were less students accepted this year, so hopefully they’ll be some that get in off the waitlist.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Math Honor Society tutoring; 2 weeks volunteer at a laboratory (basically an unpaid internship/shadowing).
[] Summer Activities: 8 week lab internship w/ paid stipend; 2 week volunteer internship; vacation

[] What You Do For Pleasure: (4) Going to the beach; swings.

[] Trait Most Proud Of: (2) Curiosity (probably terrible)
[] World You Come From: (3) Described parents background, how they influence my work ethic/drive to succeed.
[] Significant Challenge: (2) Failing at a Science Olympiad competition (also probably terrible)[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation: Probably very good but not very personal. One from a math teacher I’ve had for three years whom I have so much respect for and have gone through precalc, single and multivariable calculus, probability/statistics, set theory, linear algebra, and all kinds of other topics with through IB Math HL and dual enrollment classes. Another from an English teacher who has a reputation for being pretty tough with grades; I was one of two or three As out of all of his classes last year. [/li][] Counselor Rec: No idea, says he writes “good recommendations for all of [his] students.”
[] Additional Rec: Sent one from an internship I think.
[] Interview: Not a very good interview. My interviewer came about 20 minutes late; I failed to answer two of those ambiguous interview questions that they sometimes ask; rambled on about technical stuff in my internships (don’t think he understood a word I was saying; I think he was a political science major like 15 or 20 years ago at MIT).

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Decent grades, test scores; research internships; dad knows a potentially influential professor.
[] Weaknesses: No hook. Lack of community service, athletics; near perfect but imperfect grades/test scores. Dropped IB Diploma. Should have studied or done sports instead of goofing around and playing WoW/LoL/TF2/GW2/CS:S/CS:GO all throughout high school.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Okay on paper, but little flair. Essays not particularly good because I don’t have any inspiring stories to tell about obstacles I’ve overcome and I haven’t built a nuclear reactor or a cyclotron in my garage. Interview didn’t go so well either. Besides all of this, I hate to say it, but affirmative action probably made it so I didn’t have a chance to begin with.

[li]Waiting for notifications from: Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley. [/li][/ul]
General Comments:
Expected to be rejected; got rejected.

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure I really wanted to go to MIT in the first place (it was something my parents really wanted). When I visited, the busy environment and proximity to Boston stressed me out. I think I’d like a more rural or suburban setting.

To future applicants: if you want to get in, don’t be lazy; you probably need a hook. If you try hard enough, you can get that 2400 SAT/4.0 GPA, qualify for USAMO, win ISEF, etc. and with these kinds of accolades, you will probably get in everywhere you apply.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Interviews, research adviser’s recommendation, Eagle Scout, being a pretty well rounded individual with a passion for learning (so cliche, but they need a few right?)
[] Weaknesses: Test scores, lack of major awards, not valedictorian, didn’t cure cancer.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: See strengths. But seriously I don’t know how. Someone at the admissions office dropped the ball or something.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] I mean I got in, so nothing. But probably done less of the nonsense clubs I didn’t care about (I didn’t even bother listing them on my application). I mean I’m pretty satisfied with my high school career. Just enjoy yourself.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Just have fun in high school. I had fun. I didn’t drink or smoke or party hard. Some nights I’d be the DD and go to parties with my friends and laugh, other nights I’d sit at home and read sciency things on wikipedia, and other nights I’d spend hours talking to girls. C’est la vie. Just be yourself and enjoy it. If a college doesn’t accept you, they don’t think you’re a good fit. Chances are you’ll enjoy yourself where ever you get accepted. Good luck!
