Consortium question

Do the other schools do much cross registration at pomona? I am especially curious about majors. It seems like each of the other schools have a focus (Harvey mudd and science, CMC and polysci, etc) and don't offer many majors outside that focus. I am looking for a degree in IR and Russian ormaybe history and russian. Pomona is the only school that offers Russian as a major. Could a student from, say, scripps, major in Russian at Pomona and history at her own school? I was just curious. I know I am applying to pomona but was thinking about checking out scripps as well when I visit for my interview at Pomona this october, since it seems like another great (and slightly safer in my case) school.

Pomona is not a safety for anyone. Its selectivity is roughly similar to Harvey Mudd.

You can double major on two different campuses, as I understand.

dude, I wasn't saying pomona was a safety. I was implying that I would apply to scripps as well as pomona because, while it is a selective school, it is safer for my resume than pomona. pomona is one of my reaches. If I get in I will be thrilled. If not, oh well. I am not assuming that I am sure to get in anywhere, much less a top five school like pomona. I am a senior. I have thought through my list carefully. please don't make judgements based on one sentence.

devushka,

The answer to your question is yes -- a student at Scripps can major in a field that is offered only at another Claremont campus (Pomona, as in your example). There are also majors that are joint programs shared by several campuses. Scripps is a wonderful choice and I encourage you to check it out while you are visiting Pomona. If you have time, see if you can arrange an interview and even an overnight at Scripps. It is a terrific campus.

Thanks Norskmom. Hopefully I'll at least get a tour in, and if I'm lucky an interview. It was kind of a spur of the moment decision to go ahead and consider Scripps because I thought the campus was so pretty and the all womens thing might be nice, especially if I would have other opportunities to meet men through the consortium. Anyway, I feel much better now that I have a better understanding of how the consortium works.

I know multiple Scripps Russian students/majors. Cross-registration and cross-majoring are both totally normal across all the schools.

I visited Scripps on a whim after stumbling onto the campus after Pomona and CMC tours. It's a good place :-)

Good luck!

Is it possible to transfer to another college in the consortium? I love Pomona but it would be a reach for me. If I was accepted at Pitzer/Scripps could I later transfer to Pomona.

Yes, it's possible, but really not advisable. There are other threads on this exact same topic which I'd advise you to look for. If you can't find them, I can give it a shot :-)

People do transfer between the colleges, but I definitely wouldn't go to a college with the intent of transferring. Most people who transfer have a good reason-- such as a Harvey Mudd kid who realizes that he wants to major in literature. In that situation, it would be smart to transfer to a different school, and going to another one in the consortium would be a much easier adjustment than going to a completely new environment.

In most situations though I think that transferring between colleges in the consortium is frowned upon. How do you explain to the Scripps friends that you just made that you're going to be moving down the street to Pomona because you think it's better than Scripps? And on top of that, I'm not really sure that it's any easier to transfer into a claremont school from another claremont school than it is from one outside of the consortium. So there is really no reason to go to one claremont college if you really want to be at a different one.

One of the most common reasons people don't like being at one of the 5c's is that they chose one they could get into - not the one that was right for them. While yes, it is possible to major at Pomona while going to Scripps or Pitzer, and it's arguably easier to get in to Scripps or Pitzer, you still are going to be a student at Scripps or Pitzer - and both of those schools have very strong cultures that are either perfect for you, or will make you unhappy. Be careful, the other schools aren't a loophole into Pomona - or any of the other schools for that matter.

Sorry for the annoying highlighted words...I had a very specific idea of what I was looking for, but no recollection of exactly when it was from. Reading back, I think I sounded a little more harsh than I meant to, and I don't mean to come across as lecture-y now, but read some of the linked thread if, at any point, you really are considering a cross-consortium transfer (outside of one of the unforseeable circumstances such as that described by theboneyking).

Good luck!
