Construction at UNC

There has been much said in a number of posts regarding all the construction going on at UNC. First off, despite the inconveniences it is a good thing that will bring new and improved facilities to the campus. Secondly, the level of disruption caused by the construction has dropped off dramatically from what it was when we first visited UNC in the Spring of 2004.

Today's Daily Tar Heel has an article about the construction. Here is an excerpt.

"....Kapp said students and faculty tired of orange cones and pedestrian detours shouldn't have to worry too much longer.

"We can't sustain this level of building activity forever," he said, adding that eventually money will become an issue.

The budget for the current round of projects tips the scale at more than $1 billion.

"We've completed 68 projects for $691 million," Runberg said. "Forty projects are still in construction - the value of that is about $606 million - and 60 projects are still under design at about $498 million."

According to the facilities planning and construction Web site, the project with the largest budget - almost $90 million - was awarded to the Hunt Construction Group for work on the genetic medicine building.

Other companies that have received large contracts include Centex Construction for the first and second phases of the science complex and Skanska for renovations to Morrison Residence Hall.

And the effects of the $1 billion construction boom will be seen for years to come.

While some projects, such as the renovations of Morrison and the Campus Y building, will be done this year, others, such as the bell tower development, have years until completion."

Construction never ends, you just got to deal with it.
