Construction & Developments News

I’m going to start a development thread since a lot of the readers on here are parents, alumni and prospectives who may not be on campus so much.

I’m hoping maybe this could be stickied by a moderator.

First, I’ll repost the photos I took of the new Malone-Hood Plaza in front of the newly-renovated Foster Auditorum.

This rather bland edifice will go up at the end of Jackson Avenue, which is the road that juts off Bryant Dr. across of the Alabama Credit Union headquarters and just to the east of the law school.

Here’s a rendering of what the area of the SEC is going to look like once SEC Phase IV is completed.

You’ll notice the Phase IV will connect to the front wing of HM Comer (the back wings will be razed) and a road will be built to connect Campus Dr. East to 7th Avenue.

Also, I think the parking lot across from the Ferg, despite being intact in the rendering, will go away in favor of a northern quad and a compete reconnection of Campus Dr. E & W.

good idea Feeno, and thanks for the effort. Anyone know how to make this thread stick?

Great idea on the thread. I get back a few times a year but I’m always interested in seeing what’s planned and how things are developing.

But will they have to rebrick HM Comer Hall? From my memory, the bricks of HM Comer do not match those of the two SEC buildings. Not sure why they feel the need to keep that front part of HM Comer. It really does not look that good to me.

^^^
I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly, the interior of the front part of HM Comer has been renovated.

keep this bumped up

*The fourth building is planned to host a range of engineering research labs, including bioengineering. *

Does that mean that Bama is going to be allowed to offer that major? In the past, Bama hasn’t been allowed to offer it so as to not compete with UAB. Maybe there’s now enough interest/students to keep that major at both campuses full.

Not necessarily, Bioengineering research is currently being done across several departments, such as ChBE, Biology, and ME. I doubt biomedical engineering would ever be offered here.

^^^

Feeno…which classes are bio-engineering that are in those depts? I’m sure that that is good info to have since many ask about that major.

In ChemE, we have Intro to Biochemical Engineering and Tissue Engineering at the very least. The former course is more a traditional chemical engineering course except the chemical processes study are more biological in nature, e.g. bioreactors. The latter is more akin what you would think of as “bio-engineering”. Topics of discussion include artificial generation of tissues, etc. ME has a course in Biomedical Engineering, which deals in classical BME topics such as artificial limbs. I’m not very familiar with what’s offered in the biology dept.

However, I feel it’s more important to point out that what a department deals with in research is often far more expansive than what its curriculum teaches. That’s why it’s possible to have interdisciplinary labs in bioengineering even though there may not be an organized department of bioengineering or biomedical engineering.

Feeno or others…

How big is each phase?

SEC II - 212,000 sq. ft.

SEC III - 208,000 sq. ft.

SEC IV - 185,000 sq. ft. (projected)
