Good evening all,

I will be a transfer student towards Spring semester classes next year. With that said, I was hoping the CC collective could give me some suggestions on what I could do to improve and gain entrance in the schools I apply to.. (Or if It looks just fine, please say so!)

Thanks and have a great week!

Current School: Texas Community College
Entering as: Sophmore
High School GPA: GED
College GPA: Currently 3.49, should be 3.75 by end of summer
SAT/ACT Scores: None, I need to take it!
SAT II Scores:
Significant ECs: Founder and President of Psych club, Founder of Chess club, VP Philosophy Club, Local Honors and Scholar Program, Rated tournament chess player, local Astronomy Society. (After GPA comes up, Phi Theta Kappa.)
Hooks: 10 Years enlisted US Military with multiple years in leadership position, lived in Europe for 3 years while serving, very poor upbringing / lived off child support, first in my family to go to college, living towards American dream and I make a hell of a sangria :)

I apologize, I didn’t realize that it would be considered important. (I’m still fairly new to the transfer world.)

I was looking at Columbia GS, Rice and UT Austin

I would forget about Columbia. Unless your sats, essays, and recs are exceptional enough to make up for your sub 4.0 gpa (it really has to be around there, especially from a community college) it probably won’t happen

I appreciate the straightforward answer Overcore. I know at the present moment my chances aren’t so hot, but I have a good chunk of the year to improve my possibilities which is why after going through the forums I am posting for advice. :)

Well the ten years serving as an enlisted member of the armed forces may be very attractive to colleges, especially smaller “liberal arts” schools because these schools seem to focus more on diversity. It also depends on what you are majoring or what courses you are currently taking taking, i.e. a 4.0 in basket weaving isn’t going to cut it if you want to transfer out. Lastly you really need to take the Sat’s, it’s a four hour IQ test, but college admission boards need to know how smart you are before they consider accepting you to their university.

Lastly, thank you for your service to this nation and defending the freedoms and rights that I and 300+ million Americans enjoy everyday.
