Consulting directly after undergrad......?????

I plan on majoring in either finance or economics at either DePaul University or Rutgers-NB and I am interested in going into a consulting firm such as Mckinsey, Bain, Boston Consulting Group, etc.
Would I have any chance at landing such a position with a degree from either of these universities or is it in my best interest to transfer to a better school (possibly Northwestern) after a year or two? Are these jobs hard to come by?

You need to be looking at higher ranked school if you want to work for those companies.

Definitely not Depaul.

Maybe Rutgers, but I’m not really too sure.

Rutgers actually has detailed lists of employers that have attended recent career fairs on their career center website. I didn’t see any of the big consulting firms. There is ONE consulting firm listed called “Analysis Group”, but I’ve never heard of it.

http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/pdf/BusinessLiberalArts2010.pdf

Analysis Group is a good firm.

To be honest, you are going to have an extremely difficult time getting into MBB (Mck, Bain, BCG) without an Ivy League undergraduate degree. I had about as good of a resume that an undergrad could have from a non-target (non-Ivy) school and I was only borderline. I probably could have gotten something rolling with BCG but I ended up sticking with B4 because it was much more of a sure thing and not nearly as risky of a venture (without sacrificing too much in name, IMO).

After reading your initial post, the first question that came to my mind is “Do you even know what consultants do?” I think you need to do more research about the firms, the prestige associated with the firms, and the difficulty of entering into the field without an MBA.

that’s not completely true about ivys being exclusive. Umich, utexas, and uva are all well represented at top consulting and ib firms.

I just looked through UVA’s career day events and didn’t see MBB in it, especially for undergrads. I did see Accenture, Deloitte Consulting, Oliver Wyman, Mercer, and a few other big names, but not MBB.

MBB are much more interested in MBA grads that undergrads. A friend of mine’s father is a partner at McKinsey and the way he described it to her is, “You don’t come to McKinsey, McKinsey comes to recruit you.” Networking is a huge piece of landing a job at MBB without being a top target school.

It can be done though. I probably could have done it had I had the time line to give it a shot, but I wasn’t going to turn down B4 consulting for the prayer of MAYBE getting an interview with MBB.

Well Boston Consulting wasn’t there because they have their own recruiting office ON the UVA campus.

I don’t think McKinsey and Bain have offices on the actual campus but they do have their own web pages for UVA students. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Rutgers. The big consulting firms have zero relationship with the career center at Rutgers, but they actively recruit UVA graduates.

Go through the list and you’ll see Mckinsey, Bain, and BCG pop up frequently. UVA graduates have a long history of success at these companies and that should continue.

McKinsey was on UVA’s campus Feb. 3rd, 2011 for recruiting.

Very interesting links. I am surprised to see UVA undergrads being so heavily targeted. I strongly considered transferring there after my freshman year of college. One of those “what could have been” scenarios haha.

would getting a masters degree in either finance or econ from a top ~25 bschool increase my prospects

Definitely. Especially an MBA from a Top 20 school. I don’t know how much a Masters in Economics helps…

You need work experience to get into a top MBA program though.
