I applied on Oct. 31st to Duke (so I of course missed the cutoff of Oct. 19th for an interview), but today I got an email from my alumni interviewer? Is this correct? I'm not complaining, but I just want to make sure that Duke just isn't making a mistake here, or there was an error with their software?

Even if you applied past the deadline, you will have an interview IF the interviewer has time. The deadline date is to give you more of a guarantee. Last year my S filed before the RD deadline but was NOT granted an interview- either an interviewer in our area was too booked or not available. The fact that S did not receive an interview did not hurt him. He still got into Duke and even received a “likely” letter.

it all depends on the number of interviewers available in the area. Big cities = more alumni = more slots available so they’ll grant interviews until they run out (usually on a first come first served basis). In areas with few or no alumni, you could meet all the deadlines and still not have an interview. That’s why it’s not a required part of the application.
