Contacting admissions officials

Hi, y'all, a friend of mine sent me a link to this forum a few weeks ago. It's comforting to see other students in the same admissions circus as I am.

Anyways, I was deferred and am wondering what, if anything, I should do to "package" myself better. I'm also wondering 1) whether it's a good idea to contact my regional director and simply ask her and 2) whether I should ask my counselor (whom I won't see again until January 3) to do this or call myself. Any tips for a confused soul?

holy crap you like garou too!?!

as to your post, I think ppl on this board have said that it's a good idea to have your GC call the rep.

that was a fast reply, thanks! I don't think we're thinking of the same garou, sorry. =/ I am a Harry Potter dork and my favourite character is Remus Lupin. I also happen to be a French dork and werewolf in French is loup-garou. I don't know why I felt the urge to drop the "loup" part; come to think of it. Um, anyways, what garou were you thinking of? band? anime?

how disappointing. lol, just kidding. yea I was talking about the singer garou (don't know if you ever saw the french comedie musicale "Notre Dame", but he played quasimodo and was amazing.) Garou isn't his real name; he actually derived it from loup-garou, so you two have parallel thinking :)

Garou--I'd say it's fine to wait until January and have your GC call the admissions rep; you probably wouldn't reach anyone before the holidays anyway, and I'm not sure how eager reps are to talk directly with disappointed applicants. And the adcoms aren't likely to look again at your file until all the applications are in.

My daughter was deferred last year, and because of vacations, etc., it was probably mid-January by the time her GC spoke to the Yale rep. My daughter followed up the call with a letter to the rep; and as it happened, she was admitted in April.

I say "as it happened," because I believe that the calls and letters are a necessary formality to express ongoing enthusiasm for Yale, but don't otherwise change much, if anything. While there's a remote possibility that the rep might mention something that bothered them about your application, chances are that the application was pretty terrific--that's why you were deferred and not rejected. It's not that they didn't like you, but they really do want to wait and see how your file looks when it's put in the context of all the other rocket scientists/rugby players/Latin scholars/mimes, etc., who are applying this year.

Good luck--I know what a grueling process this is, but you're in very good company. If you haven't seen it, there's a particularly heartening thread in the Parents forum on "Outcomes after EA/ED rejection last year" (which applies to deferrals too): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=15378.

editrix- Thanks for the confidence booster; I feel much more on top of things now (love the thread you posted, btw!). Speaking of stuff that the reps won't like, though, I know one thing that'll definitely be mentioned. I submitted my application at the very last minute (yes, Yale is my top choice and yes, I am dumb) and in my stupor I missed a typo. I also talk about how much I like editing in my essay. eye roll irony. That's one of the reasons I was so flustered about my deferral; I had mentally given up on Yale and didn't know what to do about my sliver of a chance. Anyways, I should start thinking about damage control, but how, I don't know.

asterstar- Oh no, I'm not an original thinker? Now I'll never get into Yale! ;)

Garou, who among us has no typo?! Relax, they're reading at the speed of light anyway, and won't pick it up. If they do, they'll gasp in horror, since they themselves never make them, right? Don't worry...

hehe...I misspelled something on an email to my admissions rep, and I never misspell anything. Yale just gets me all nervous/excited. It didn't hurt me at all, though...and my rep misspelled something in his reply to me, so it all worked out...:)

Heh, thanks guys.

cruncha i aint never had a tyope in my life
