Contacting BGO

Is there anything special that I need to or should include in my first email to my BGO. Any advice is appreciated, im kind of drawing a blank on what I should say.

Nah, just say who you are, that he's the BGO in your area, and give him your stats (ECs, test scores, etc). Also tell him what class year you're applying for. He'll then begin to monitor your progress during your application process. He'll hopefully schedule an interview with you soon too.

Hope that answers your question.

Is it better to contact him via email or is it better to contact him via phone? I mean which would give the better impression?

I'd go with phone.

Me personally- email. I sound more professional in an email lol. But ideally, call them up. Not everyone has the ability to check email regularly while most likely anyone can pick up their phone.

How does the BGO want to be contacted?

Son's wanted communication via e-mail, which then he replied with a time that He would call son. Some BGO's do not want a lot of communication. You need to be respectful of their time as they are volunteers. Take your lead from the BGO, each has their own style.

First impressions are always important. . . like spectrez, I too tend to sound more professional in letters; I'm very picky about wording, grammar, spelling, etc. so I like to check all that before I send an e-mail or letter.

I contacted my BGO first by e-mail, then by phone. It varies from BGO to BGO, though.

Last year I emailed my BGO as soon as I got back from NASS and saw his info on the CIS.

Of course, letters are much easier to edit than phone conversations, but in your email, ask what would be a good time to call.

Most importantly: contact them early. Like I said, I think I contacted my BGO around late June/early July and we had the interview early August. Later on, he mentioned that he was very impressed at how quickly I had written him; it was the earliest anyone had ever contacted him and that showed desire and such on my part. It's definitely to your advantage to write them early and show them your interest.
