Contacting BGO

I have a 15 year old son (9th grader) who has convinced me that he is interested in attending one of the SA's. The one he seems to be most interested in is the naval academy. Based on the above information, I have started educating myself about the process of gaining admission. I have read the Naval Academy web site as well as lurking on this site for some time also. My question is "When is the best/wisest time to make contact with the local BGO?" I have seen/read about people contacting the BGO as early as the 9th grade, but this seems a little early to me. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Here’s one person’s opinion. So long as your son is the one making the contacts, IMO it is not too early for him to contact a BGO and your MOC. At this point, it will be nothing more than, “Hi, I’m _____, and I am hoping to attend USxA after HS.”

BTW, are you aware of USNA’s STEM program? The application is open now on the USNA web site. It’s for 7th-9th graders, I believe. They spend several days at USNA, visit the Air and Space museum, and do projects related to science and technology.

As a BGO, my advice is that, if you have questions about USNA, feel free to contact the BGO at any time. This is actually a good time as we aren’t doing much for 2013 and don’t yet have info on 2014.

There is NO NEED to contact the BGO prior to the spring of your junior year. Some folks do so just to say hello and that’s ok. But doing so will not make your BGO like you better, think more highly of you, think you’re more motivated, etc. We are more than content to have candidates who have minimal contact just as we’re happy to talk to those with lots of questions.

Again, if you do have questions, ask away. That’s what BGOs are here for.

Both replies are very helpful.
