Wow - so much great information on this board! We are just starting out on the recruitment journey and this has been an incredible resource. Daughter is a sophomore and ready to start reaching out to some college coaches. She has found the first school she is interested in and would like to speak with the golf coach on the phone and possibly arrange for a visit (tour school & hopefully meet with coach). If I understand correctly, if the coach is not available, she can leave a message but the coach cannot return the call as she is only a sophomore. The school she is interested in is having finals this week and then on break until end of January. Are coaches typically in their offices over winter break?

Hi ttime, welcome to the boards. I would anticipate winter break as a difficult time to connect with coaches. Hard to remember this but they have family too and it is their vacation time as well. My son is a college golfer so I know golf, feel free to private message me and I hope I can be of some help to you. I can link you to some great sites as well. My son’s coach has 2 young sons and there is a very small window of time when he can just chill with his family and the holidays is one of them. Better plan would be to schedule some unofficials around your daughters spring tournament season. We started unofficials spring of soph year ourselves. You are starting at a good time. Hope to hear from you.

There aren’t the same limits on emails, so you may find you can arrange a time to meet while you visit the college in an email exchange more efficiently than the phone call/no call back game.

^^Has the guidelines changed for email because NCAA at least a couple years ago did not allow email exchange until Sept 1st of junior year. She is a sophomore. My understanding is that the coach can send a 1 time email response basically stating he/she cannot respond until such and such a time.

See this link for specifics. Sorry, it varies by sport so I should have cautioned. However, I don’t see any references to emails in what I’ve reviewed, and I know that we had email exchanges in sophomore year with coaches when we planned unofficial visits to schools, but my daugther does an “other” sport (crew).

[2012-2013 NCAA Recruiting Calendars - NCAA.org](http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Resources/Recruiting+Calendars/2012-2013+Recruiting+Calendars)

It is a good idea for anyone (parent or kid) really thinking about being recruited to be familiar with the rules on contact and evaluation. It is helpful too when scheduling contact, as you may plan on a meeting time/place that would break the rules and it makes you look less prepared or aware if you propose such to the coaches.

Thanks for the feedback. I think Ill suggest D waits til February to call the coach. Classes will be back in session then so it’s probably a better time to get a feel for the campus. Im just excited she is eager to get the ball rolling but Im also a bit anxious – reassuring though to hear shes not behind schedule. I will definitely pm you mom2010 thank you so much for the offer.
