Contacting Grad School Faculty?

On one of my Grad-schools' application, there is a question asking me to name the faculty with whom I've made contact regarding my application. How important is this question? Should I try to email a faculty member to make some kind of contact with him or her? What if I haven't had any contact with any faculty member?

Why don’t you call the dept. secretary and ask her? Most departments put that there as an option when you have contacted faculty, but it’s not a requirement. However, one program to which I applied practically required contact. It’s best to check.

I’d recommend contacting prospective faculty members, it can’t hurt and in some cases it makes all the world of differences. Its better to have faculty members see your name as much as possible in my opinion.

If it weren’t for me contacting a faculty member months before decisions were announced I would not have gotten funding to my dream program, so I may be a bit biased :)
