I just wanted to get a few opinions on emailing local college admissions reps. If students from out-of state are really interested in attending a prestigious private university, would it be a good idea to shoot the local admissions rep a quick email, maybe just stating their intent to apply and letting them know it is their first choice school? I have heard stories of students doing this, and they were able to establish a relationship with the admissions officer. Whether this helped them gain admission or not, I don't know, but it obviously didn't hurt them. However, it could come across as annoying and desperate if not done right. What is everyone's opinion on this issue? Thanks in advance.

Having been one, I’ll warn you to keep in mind they can quickly begin to dislike you if you’re a pain. If you don’t have something real to say, don’t bother them. Make sure to check whether colleges you’re interested in care about demonstrated interest, many top ones don’t.

What do you think about talking to them at the college fairs that go around the country?
