Contacting professor at potential transfer school?

What is the etiquette?

One of the universities I’d like to transfer to has a professor with a history of publishing work, sociological, with concentrations that are almost precisely the same as my own focus. In fact, he writes about a region of the world where I was born and almost all of my family still lives.

His approach is very similar, though not exactly the same, as the one I wish to take. I am so enamored with his work that I’d like to contact him and discuss my own research. My questions are:

Is there a specific etiquette to follow when contacting a professor from a different college?

Is it appropriate to mention that I may wish to apply to his institution? Is it appropriate to mention that working with this particular professor is one of the reasons I would like to attend?

Thank you in advance!

Anybody? I am also very interested in hearing some advice about this.

well i have no experience in this but just make sure to let him know how you feel and how you have hopes of matriculating at that school, its really that simple. you can mention the fact that you have communicated with him in your essay but dont expect him to help your situation at all. have you ever seen the movie orange county?

I’m not sure that there is a specific etiquette to follow, other then honesty. When I was looking at schools to trasfer to I researched their department of my major. I contacted department deans, professors, even TA’s to discuss my interest within my major and way a transfer to their college might be a good choice. I can tell you that in some cases I did not get a response from several professors. I chalk that up to them just being to busy. But, most did respond and they were pleased that I had written to them and were very helpful.
So, if you have questions, just drop them an email. Good luck on your search.
