Contacting Program Directors . . .

Hello all! I was recently told by someone that it can always work in your favor to reach out to schools you plan on applying to and asking questions.

I'm planning to major in Linguistics, so I was thinking of emailing the program directors at a few of the schools I'm very interested in to ask more about their lingusitcs program and department.

Do you recommend doing this? I'd personally like to just because the program description is pretty short on most of these school's websites, so it would be great to find out more. If so, how should I go about writin such an email?

Thanks so much!

You can find out more by reviewng the requirements for the major and the course catalog.

It can “work in your favor” in the sense that you can learn more about the school. It’s not like it will help in admissions, although being knowledgeable about the program can help you tailor your application to it.

You should really do as much research as possible on the school/program before you resort to contacting the program director. If you do end up contacting them, you should be asking very specific questions that they can easily answer. “Tell me about your program” is a really bad approach that they probably won’t have the time/energy to answer.

You could also email someone just in the program (not the director) and ask for links to resources to learn more. They may be able to send you informational materials that you could not find on your own without bothering someone higher up the food chain.

Thanks for your replies!
