Contemplating Change from CE TO ME

I'll be a sophomore in August and I have been wondering if I should change my major to Mechanical Engineering from Chemical. I had a 4.0 last semester so the challenge of CE isn't what I'm worried about that much it is more the career outlook.

What is the current state of CE in industry and in what fields? I've looked at many articles saying that the industry isn't really growing at all like other engineering fields. I don't want to be taking 4 extra credit hours every semester (compared to the other eng majors) for nothing.

I know I would enjoy Mechanical probably as much as chemical I just enrolled as a CE undergrad since I excel at chemistry and the salary is higher. Changing majors would also be fairly challenging since I would have to rework every class in my schedule.

Anyone have a good comparison of the two majors besides the generic ME works with any type of machinery and CE replicates small RXNS blah blah blah

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure Chemical= Processes(a general look at how to get from input A to product B) and doesn’t get concerned over small details such as how a pump in the system works.

Mechanical would be concerned over how the pump works, which pump to use, etc. They care about the actual things inside the process, everything.

I think thats a very superficial way to explain the two. From what I’ve gathered, if you want to do process engineering do chemical(granted that is not the only field for them), but they are generally preferred for that kind of work.

anything about job search/outlook/how classwork went for anyone

Here is an item I found that may answer a couple of your questions.

Also, for future reference, CE = civil engineering. What you want to say is ChemE.
