My daughter is interested in attending a short (three weeks or less) summer intensive that either focuses on or includes contemporary ballet. She's very interested in the NYC Complexions program, but the program doesn't offer housing. Complexions also offers a program in Detroit, which does offer housing. Has anyone heard anything about the Detroit program? Thank-you!

I personally have not heard any testimonials from kids about the Detroit one, I think it is fairly new if not brand new. But I had a friend go to the winter intensive in NY. They loved it and Desmond Richardson was there. He will also be at the one in Detroit. I am sure it will be just as good as the one in NY! They have such a great reputation, and I think because it is contemporary ballet and all the kids love the style so much the entire energy is amazing.

Good Luck with everything! I would also try to have her audition for Jacob’s Pillow and the Point Park intensives. The school at Jacob’s Pillow is tough to get in, but an incredible experience!

This may not be anything your daughter is looking for, but I have an amazing ballet/modern instructor who is doing a few intensives this coming summer.

I am a musical theatre major at Ball State University and the dance instructors here are wonderful.
Feel free to direct message me for more details if you are interested!

You didn’t say how old your d is or if there are any travel limitations. For an older teen, Summer Lee Rhatigan (formerly of LINES) has an amazing contemporary summer intensive in San Francisco. Auditions for this year ended in February (you may find that many of the programs’ audition dates for summer 2012 have already passed). However, your d could always contact the school and see if there are still openings, or consider this research for next summer.

Alonzo Kings LINES has a summer program, again the audition dates for this summer have passed, but here’s a link:

There is one final audition date for Point Park’s summer dance program – 3/25 in Pittsburgh. (There is a 3 week option there.)

Jacob’s Pillow also has one more in-person audition (same date…and in NYC at the gorgeous Ripley Grier Studios…I swear, that place is like a hug!). Anyway, they do also accept video auditions:

If interested in choreography and contemporary dance, consider Summer Stages – they have shorter programs, and different options for different age dancers:

Good luck! Love to know where she ends up for the summer, and what she thinks of the experience!
