Continue commuting or live on campus next year?

I currently commute to college which is about a twenty minute drive away, but I am considering living on campus next year out of convenience.

I don't think I'm the typical commuter student as I'm very involved in a variety of clubs and the marching band, and I have a lot friends on campus despite not living there. I'm planning on joining an honor society next semester if all goes as planned.

In my financial situation, commuting has always been the best option as it's cheaper than living on campus. If I decide to live on campus it will cost about an extra $7,000 per year with a room and meal plan, so it's not exactly an easy decision to make.

My parents are iffy about me living on campus because I dormed before at a previous college I later transferred out of and didn't like dorming there. They're also concerned I'll be home a lot of weekends out of the year when I'm not busy, and aren't sure if it would be worth the money. The cost is a big concern as well, but my parents can't help me out too much financially, so my living expenses would be up to me.

Although I don't mind commuting and it hasn't hindered me from doing anything on campus, I think it would just be more convenient to live there because I'm so active on campus and I'm there a lot of the time anyway. I have a lot of time to think about this and weigh my options, but do you think it would be worth it to live on campus again, or should I continue to commute?

If you live that close, I think it is an unnecessary and pointless extra expense. A 20 minute drive can’t be that much of an inconvenience to justify the price tag. If commuting isn’t hindering tour involvement then why change it up?

Assuming you go to school 250 days/year (slightly over 8 months, but close enough), and assuming you save 40min of travel time/day, you’re paying $42 per saved hour of travel time. Is it worth it to you?
