i have a little bit of a dilemma right now. i have finished spanish 2 and the next class to take would be spanish 3 honors, followed by 4 honors and ap after that. but i don’t really love spanish, even though it will be useful to me in the future. i would like to start taking asl, which would require me to start from level 1 obviously. that’s an issue for me because i am currently ranked 3rd in my class and rank is viewed very highly in my state, so ideally, i want to work towards being valedictorian. i’m not sure whether i should continue with a language i dislike that will bring up my gpa or start a language i do like that will drop my gpa. thank you in advance for any advice.
Apart from the effect on your class rank, colleges like to see four years of the same language. Since you started with Spanish, the path of least resistance would be to stay with it. You can always self-study ASL, or any other language.
so could i finish spanish through ap and then switch to dual credit asl my senior year? that way i’m taking high level classes that won’t harm my gpa and also getting to learn both languages
Dual Credit grades will affect your college GPA.
You could definitely get to the 4th level of Spanish and stop. You don’t have to take 4 years, just get to the 4th level.
HOWEVER, if your college requires you to take a foreign lang in college, it might be good to get AP credits to do that.
