Continuing a long-term extracirricular over AP Calculus BC?

Hi everyone, as my senior year approaches I’ve learned that my advanced chamber choir class is conflicting with AP Calculus BC. I’ve been in dedicated with my school choir since my sophomore year with memorable opportunities and experiences, it is hard to give it up. As a student interested in majoring in engineering, will dropping BC Calc heavily influence my admission, specifically toward a UC? (such as Irvine and San Diego) Instead I’d be taking Statistics and last year I’ve only taken regular Calculus (which covers all of AB just in a slower pace).

What do you want to major in?
Can you take CalcBC as dual enrollment at the CC at another time?
Is there an online version of the course you could take?

I dropped 8 years of concert band b/c my 12th grade courses were more interesting and would better equip me for college. You’ll have opportunity for choir your entire life likely another 60-70 years INCLUDING college!.

These 7 months before college are a very finite quality to prep yourself for a possible engineering major. I vote for Calc BC

I can’t speak specifically to UC’s, but IMO If you can’t get Calc BC elsewhere (ex. at a local college) then I’d place it above choir. This is especially the case if you want to major in engineering. I understand your dilemma as my D enjoyed and got a lot out of her experience in HS orchestra, but my general rule is that when push comes to shove academics trump ECs.

Perhaps you can find a different choir to sing in (ex. a church choir or something) or perhaps the choir teacher will allow you to remain involved in the school choir in some capacity.

If you were my kid and you wanted to major in engineering, I’d say absolutely take the calculus.

You can always find a choir to sing in, and it’s not going to be their job someday. On the other hand, the more calculus you can take, the better.
