Continuing Student Financial Aid for 2014-2015

Currently awaiting the Financial Aid award for my rising senior DS. He received 6k in grants his freshman year and none sophomore and junior year. We are hoping for grants this year as his sister is starting her freshman year at another school. Awards started coming out about this time last year. Please post when you receive yours!

Nerve wracking to have to wait so long before we hear. Wish it were spring so we could plan for finances accordingly. Sigh.

We received notification this morning that our “package” was complete. I use quotes, because we received nada, and this is the first year that my son didn’t get work study either. While it would have been nice to get a little somethin’ somethin’, I’m grateful that my business took off like gangbusters, that our home equity rose substantially, and that our retirement savings might look fat (to anyone except me and my husband!). Sigh. Good thing we’re so thrilled with our USC experience

So sorry @CCMThreeTimes. My stomach pretty much sank when I read your post. No news for us yet. We’re still in review and hopeful for some assistance. But like you, we really like the USC experience D’s had so far. But with two in college, it’s awfully tough to manage the costs. Retirement? - lol! What retirement :-)

Thanks @ArtsandLetters! We also had two at USC for two years (S1 graduated in '13), and the school was generous with grants and work study then, so I’ll wish the best for you!

Also received my sophomores financial aid this weekend. They took away his USC grant, Pell, work study, and subsidized Stafford loans. Now a member of the nada club.

Sorry you are disappointed in his aid - you had two at USC until this year, and so had aid while there were two in college, correct? Yes, it is a huge financial advantage to have two in college at the same time (which seems SO counter-intuitive!) and it can feel like a horrible jolt when one graduates and the aid dries up. Overall, are you left with approximately the same cost as when you had two at USC at the same time?

I never said I was disappointed. I just stated the facts.

I don’t know that anyone would love the idea of paying the same for one as they had for two! [=

Sorry! I think I would be disappointed when I looked at the aid, even if I knew there would be a big decrease when one kiddo graduated  I wouldn’t be able to help but hope for just a bit!

On the other hand, you can look at it as how great it was to get two-for-the-price-of-one while you had two at USC. Gotta love that part.

@southerncalimom So sorry to hear that. Its kind of heartbreaking because the sum is so large. Makes me think about taking a job in public service. If you do, the Plus loan is reduced based on income and the remaining balance and interest is waived after ten years. Tempting because our load with two kids is higher than our mortgage.

We still don’t have our results yet, but were told for the year after to brace for being a full pay when the oldest graduates. We’ll start trying to bulk up on outside scholarships but even USC’s FA office says it’s a lot of work for what may not amount to much money. Fingers crossed that they’ll still be kind this year. We don’t get a lot of aid, but were grateful to have it.

DS got an email last night asking for more information on one aspect of our finances. I immediately sent the information. They haven’t asked for this since his first year. He got no FA second and third year. I hope this is a good sign as we too will have two in school this year. Hoping to hear this week or next. His just went into review yesterday.

S also was ask to provide sibling info as we will have 2 in college for the first time. Hope we hear soon.

Still waiting here…the suspense is killing me. They didn’t ask for any information about DS’s sibling in college, just about a private loan we have.

Got the email that Financial Aid for 2014-2015 is complete this morning (06/24/2014). Got more grant money even though our financial didn’t change much from previous years. I am happy!!

I posted in another thread earlier this month…our D’s Financial Aid did not have any significant changes this year. Very happy and thankful for the generous grants/scholarship! We were a little concerned because our business income went up a little. And we were asked to use the “new” format to file for FA. So glad it all worked out! Thank you, USC!

We are still in review. Biting our nails. Congrats to those of you who have closure. I guess no news is good news. We did get good news with our oldest so maybe that is a harbinger of more things to come.

We still have not gotten any info… Is that a bad sign? What percentage of continuing students still haven’t heard?

@Parent46 - I think a large percentage has not heard. The FinAid tab still says that most continuing USC students won’t hear until early July. Now I understand all those students threads that start with “have you heard yet?” re: admissions. lol! :-)

We got ours about a week ago. No grants even though we have two in college. I will be asking for reconsideration.
