Contradictory SAT score policies?

On Duke’s website, [here, they say:

On that same page, however, there is a link to a PDF, here, that says under the “Standardized Testing Scores” section:

So…does Duke allow applicants to exercise Score Choice or not? They can’t seem to make up their mind.

In the first link as well, Duke says that “two SAT Subject Tests are strongly recommended.” However, if they’re asking for “all test scores,” does that include all SAT IIs?

Seguing onto the subject of a different college, on Stanford’s website, here,](http://admissions.duke.edu/application/instructions)they say:

Does this mean that if you took both the SAT and ACT, you have to send every single score? The same site also lists SAT IIs as “optional,” but will the adcomms be a little annoyed if you send 3 or 4 instead of the usual 2?

Cornell’s policy confuses me as well.

And this should probably be inserted into another thread, but: ACT scores are kind of expensive to send. It’s per test, per school. I’m planning on applying to 7. How does the self-reporting thing work? Do I tell them my scores, and they check with the test center after I’m admitted? Can I save money that way?

I’m floundering.

If you are unsure or feel there is ambiguity, it is best to call and ask.

Ah, well. My scores have been in Duke’s hands for a while now. Hopefully they won’t ding me for the existence of lower scores.

To answer your question about self reporting scores, you can self report on the common app, but colleges need you to send the scores through ACT or college board. The self reported scores need to be verified.

@wisteria100, can that wait until after admission? For example, I don’t particularly want to cough up a lot of money per ACT test to Stanford if I’m gonna get rejected anyway.

^^^ No. Your application will not be considered complete until official scores are received from ACT or the College Board. Your app won’t be reviewed until they get those scores

That’s what I thought. Something on Stanny’s page made me think otherwise. Thanks,@wisteria100

@wisteria100 is correct. The scores must be sent from the test companies directly for our application to be complete. I believe Duke wants all scores form the SAT/ACT. I think its the subject tests that you can select which to send.

@jym626 To clarify, not both, correct? Only all of my SATs, or all of my ACTs–not all of both, as Stanford requires.

Check with the school. I believe all means all, (SAT and ACTs) but check with Duke.

We found this very frustrating also.
(most) Schools REQUIRE you to have an SAT or ACT score. No schools require you to TAKE both tests.
But then some schools REQUIRE you to “provide ALL scores”.

Unless it clearly stated otherwise, we interpreted it to mean that whichever score you were having OFFICIALLY sent, to meet the testing requirement(s), you send ALL sittings of THAT test.

Scores from the OTHER test(s), we self-reported.

Colleges KNOW that the CommonApp has the self-reporting section. You would think that they could be clearer with regard to which scores (above and beyond the basic, required, officially-reported) are OK to self-report. But app after app, my kids had to go to the school’s admission page, read and re-read the requirements, and still, it was rarely clear if it was OK to self-report those OTHER scores and, most importantly, whether those self-reported “extra” scores would be reviewed/considered. How hard is it to just spell it out?

@WhataProcess What an appropriate user name :)). I think I might call them and try to clarify. I do agree that it’s quite frustrating.

I called them. They now allow applicants to exercise Score Choice.

A bit late. I’ve already sent 3 tests to them. They’re still pending, but you can’t even cancel pending offers. Nice one, CB.
