controverial issue essays

so on some of the colleges i've been looking at, it asks to talk about an issue that raises your concern, why are you so passionate about it etc. and i asked my counselor if it was okay to write essays with a controversial topic, and to write them from a point of view that the reader may not agree with. he said that yes, i could, but some of my friends and my parents say to stick to safer topics. i have a variety of essays written, but have no idea which ones are okay to send. soo.... are controversial topics okay?

The same issue arised with me. I wanted to do a topic about the upcomming struggle for the Obama presidency. I was afraid that I might have a republican [Or even democratic] reader who might be offended in some sort of way. I chose to talk about the impending population crisis instead.

It's your call man. I took the safe road just in case.

Nobody wants to read safe essays. You're better picking an essay topic that they'll remember than you are writing something forgettable.

I think that you should also just go for it, and if it controversial you should argue for the negative because that allows you to use more facts and stats to prove the negative than using just opinion to defend the affirmative. They want to read essays that will stand out from the rest and not be just like the thousands of other essays they will read.

i guess so...but since i live in california, my topic was going to be gay marriage...as that issue has come up lately. i think i'll just try to look at it critically and use the more well written essay.

Make certain that the essay is mainly about you, and not mainly about gay marriage.
