Controversial essay topics?

you will never know why they rejecte dyou. They can reject you because your name sounds funny for all you know...

LOL i don't know what the hell i was thinking myself but i got in somewhere, right? hahaha..

I wrote an essay talking like a pirate

excerpt
[quote]
Sum o' da lubbers dat we be meetin' along da way try to take da treasure we gained from our travels, others jes want ter make wid da dancin’, and mer jes make sure dey don’t try to get in da way of da booty we be after

Which went on for half a page. I think it made one college think that I was crazy, but it did get me into another (IMO). The key tho was explaining the whole thing in context and not leaving up to their own interpretation. Which i did for the college that did accept me, but not for the college that rejected me.

So if youre going to do something crazy that will make you look insane, write an explanation. Mine related games winning and losing and fun, and it was overall very well done... but the shorter version just had the pirate talk and no explanation.

Can I write an essay about how Bush is a horrible president, how he messed up the country, how he should be impeached, and how he scored sub-1200 on the SATs, and expect to get admitted if I have reasonable stats?

He actually scored a 1206, equivalent to about a 1280 in today's terms. Obviously not worthy of Yale, but the guy has some intelligence.

That sounds like a boring essay

1280/1600? Wow that sucks.. great having a famous daddy with a legacy @ yale (he had a legacy, right?)

It's not terrible. Believe me...a lot of people would KILL to do that well. However, that's obviously not merit material for Yale. So, yes, we can conclude that Bush's legacy and the fact that Poppy was president of the CIA helped a lot. However, it's not fair to say that he's a complete moron. Like him or not, he has a reasonable amount of intelligence.

He has a reasonable amount of intelligence?

I have a calendar full of "Bushisms" (words that he has either hugely mispronounced, or words that he has made up), and there is one "Bushism" for every day of the year

Yes, he does. Just because he isn't a good publi speaker doesn't mean that he's a moron.

In fact, he WANTS you to think he's dull. That's how he got so much of the middle American vote. He was able to FOOL the working class that he is similar to them in terms of both intelligence and origins (even though neither is true).

that's how a lot of presidents got to the white house, by appealing to the masses

anyway, to criticize someone else doesn't seem to me as a good essay topic, and if some of your adcoms are conservative, it might offend them.

Ha, I love how this thread has degenerated into a discussion on Bush's perceived intelligence...

Btw, I'm (original poster) female, straight, first generation immigrant. I'm not sure if that counts for anything.

Depends from where.

China, though I don't really count I suppose, since I moved here when I was three or so. But my family is fairly traditional, not hardcore traditional, thank god.

going along with the bush issue of intelligence...IMO although he is not the brightest President we have ever seen, he's still a smart guy. also, ever heard of "smart in school, dumb in life"? although this is a very broad statement, i think it somewhat applies...i have friends who do amazingly well in school but still make stupid pronunciation and grammatic errors. much as i dislike the guy, i don't doubt that IQ-wise, he isn't as idiotic as many feel.

To the OP: And your parents haven't disowned you for doing gay rights work? My [Asian/conservative] parents are quite homophobic.

It's a bit of a don't ask, don't tell kind of thing. I try not to bring it up. Every once in a while, we'll have a really ugly/tearful argument and they have threatened to pull financial support once, though that seems to have smoothed over. They're not extremely traditional, as I said - mostly really uncomfortable.

Actually, I think your parents reactions (or a lack thereof) to your gay rights work is a lot more interesting then the actual gay rights work. Not that the gay rights work isn't a wonderful thing, but it may create just another boring essay topic. However, the paragraph you just wrote about fighting with your parents over it, had me hooked. I was itching for more. It's so much more personal. Just my advice.

But then again I wrote my college essay on something really out there, so I may not be the best judge.
