Hi :) I'm studying under the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A level curriculum. The problem is I have no idea how to convert my grades into American GPA. Anyone can help?

One more problem is I don't know how to compare the rigor of my courses to American system. I'm taking Higher Level 2 in Physics, Maths, Chemistry and Economics but I don't know if they can be compared to an accelerated, AP, Honors or IB under the American system. I'd appreciate if anyone can answer. Thanks a lot

The A Level curriculum (academic subjects) is considered most rigorous. In fact you’ll even get credits for A-C marks.
Your grades won’t be converted but you need GCSE’s and AS levels at A-C.
Do you want to calculate it to get an idea or were you asking for admission purpose?

I just posted this on another thread so i’ll just copy and paste

Loosely converting according to CIE itself
A* - 4.0
A - 4.0
B - 3.7
C - 3.0
D - 2.3
E - 2.0
F - 1.3
G - 1.0
U - 0

One point is added for A level grades since A level courses are equivalent to AP

For ex. My O levels were 3A* 3A 2B
So:
(4+4+4+4+4+4+3.7+3.7)/8=3.925

My predicted for A levels would be 3A 1B
So:
(5+5+5+4.7)/4=4.925 [this is weighted]

Note how i added one point to my A levels to calculate weighted GPA. Dont add one point to each subject if u are calculating unweighted gpa.

As rigor goes. Im sure you are aware of credits. For example, economics is a double credit subject. A level is equivalent to AP

And this is a loose calculation. Should not be taken to exact number. It is still hard to compare grades from different systems. The chart was taken from CIE website

So can I use my O level grades to calculate my weighted GPA to fill in my CommonApp? Or must I use my school exam results? In CommonApp 4 they have this option of choosing whether my course is accelerated, AP, Honors or IB. Can I choose AP since they are equivalent? Thanks a lot :)

I said this is a LOOSE calculation. Dont enter the GPA u calculated on the common app or any form. Talk to ur GC about it.

Oh ok. Thanks a lot for the help guys :)

@L1nhtr4n hey!
I’m Singaporean and I was wondering about this too! I was quite curious as to how the transcript evaluation works and I think our results won’t actually be converted to GPA? Anyway, my counselor said that any college in the US would know how rigorous the Singapore education system is.

But yeah, I heard that a C for our A level is actually an A considering the fact that Singapore uses a different A level system? Apparently it is one of the hardest education systems in the world! I mean, its pretty obvious since we have students taking medical leaves and what not just so they could study at home. (I know, I’ve done it too.)

As far as I know, we have to use our predicted results from our prelims to apply for the colleges and actually O levels don’t actually matter that much. I’ve sent emails to some UC schools and they said we have to apply with our predicted grades and after we get (conditionally?)accepted, we send in our official transcripts when it is released. (Which means I’m screwed because prelims are horrible!)

I’m sure a lot of colleges have that requirement too but I can’t confirm because I only emailed UC schools. Contact the colleges if you want to know for sure!

@muhammad9211 I’m not sure if we have A* in Singapore’s A level grading system. Perhaps your O level A* was an A1?

Im not familiar with A1. Generally
90-100 = A*
80-89 = A
70-79 = B
And so forth. Then theres the percentile. Meaning depending on the overall performance of all the test takers, the bands can go up or down.
